Description

“Heretaunga Street from Market Street looking towards railway line after a large fire in February 1893. The fire destroyed buildings on both sides of the street. The Napier Fire brigade’s steamer was brought over on a special train, as Hastings had no steamer at the time.” – from ‘Fighting Flames – A Century of Firefighting in Hastings 1886-1986’ by Russell Kirkby, 1986
