The caravan was presented to the people of Hawke’s Bay by the National Council of Women, from donations from the “Year of the Child” telethon in 1978. It was “fitted out” by volunteers of the Hawke’s Bay Family Planning Association, and used as a mobile health clinic, visiting maraes, freezing works, and other places of work, starting in 1981. Doctor Libby Smales and various nurses ran the clinic, April Armstrong arranged visits at the various places.
