She’s still smiling – after 28 years of ‘feeding’ the big Bon Marche ‘family’, altering thousands of dresses and trousers for customers, keeping the staff tea-room and rest-room floors sparkling and customer ‘loos’ spotless. Meet Amy Bourke, tea lady extraordinaire, pictured with her friend and ‘boss’, Bon Marche Managing Director Richard Jones, on the 28th anniversary of her starting at Hastings Bon Marche, October 26 1961. The ‘birthday’ cake was baked and beautifully iced by fellow staff member, Erena Griffiths, and was greatly enjoyed by last Thursday’s many customers.
Amy is typical of the wonderful loyalty and dedication of Bon Marche staff, all carefully chosen for their qualities of friendliness and helpfulness. With Christmas fast approaching, customers at both Hastings and Napier Bon Marche stores can know for certain that they will be well looked after, quickly, efficiently, and that Bon Marche itself will stand behind all the goods it sells.
