A further twelve people were welcomed into the community when they received Naturalisation Certificates at a ceremony conducted by the Mayor of Napier, Mr. Peter Tait, at the City Council Chambers. POWER BOAT REGATTA
A large crowd witnessed some thrilling races when the Heretaunga Power Boat Club held its annual regatta on the Ngaruroro River, Clive. A particular facet which pleased both competitors and spectators was the excellent handicapping. Pictured here, is “Alca Zar” from Hamilton, which, unfortunately had some trouble but nevertheless showed tremendous speed.

SCOUTS AND GUIDES FOUNDERS DAY
Guides, Scouts, Cubs and Brownies gathered at Eskdale Park to commemorate the birthday of the founder of the Scout movement, Lord Baden-Powell. DEDICATION OF ST. JOHN’S CATHEDRAL
Thirty-four years after the disastrous earthquake destroyed the first Cathedral of Waiapu, the dedication of the new Cathedral took place in the presence of 1500 worshippers and notables. Honouring the occasion with his presence was the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Michael Ramsey. Here we show the Archbishop of Canterbury preceeded by his chaplain, the Rev. John Andrew, bearing the famous Primatial Cross, moving into the Cathedral.

FAMOUS POTTER IN NAPIER
Before a capacity crowd which filled the Napier War Memorial, Japan’s Shoji Hamada, the world’s leading potter, demonstrated his art. Brought to Napier by the Japan Society of Hawke’s Bay in conjunction with the Napier Pottery Group, Mr. Hamada held his audience enthralled during the entire demonstration. NEW JAYCEE CHAPTER AT TARADALE

SEARCH AND RESCUE EXERCISE
A search and rescue exercise involving some 60 persons was carried out in the Ruahine Ranges near Wakarara recently. It was initiated by the Heretaunga Tramping Club and was organised to find a reportedly missing deerculler. Many groups of people took part in the exercise including trampers, Police Force personnel, St. John Ambulance, Central Hawke’s Bay Shooters’ Association, Venturer Scouts and members of the Lands and Survey Department. The man up the pole (left) Mr. Taylor, is not setting out to establish a new pole squatting record but merely attaching an aerial to the powerful sets supplied by the Civil Aviation Department to receive messages from the eight searching parties out, on the mountains.

MANGATERETERE SCHOOL GALA
The Mangateretere School recently held a most successful gala to raise funds for a new Assembly Hall. Pictured here are the boys and girls with their decorated bicycles.
We show here Mrs. Duncan McIntyre, who judged the fancy dresses, with the winners of the girls fancy dress parade. They are, Aorangi Tuki, Maori Girl, 1st; Dawn Clark, Poor Little Match Girl, 2nd; and Alison Hyde, Coconut Ice, 3rd.

ATHLETICS UNDER NEW FLOOD LIGHTING
With a crowd of approximately 3500 on hand to witness the switching on of an £18,000 floodlighting system at McLean Park, Napier, the stage was set for a new era of outdoor sport in Hawke’s Bay. To mark the occasion, an athletic meeting with top flight athletes competing, was held. To New Zealand’s Olympic and world record holder, Peter Snell, fell the honour of throwing the switch which put the lights into operation. The Mayor of Napier, Mr. Peter Tait, is at left.
As inevitably as night follows day, Peter Snell wins the mile race in the fastest time ever returned at Mclean Park.
Nevelle Scot comes home a very convincing winner in the three mile event.

Wayne Overened of Auckland, extreme left, was untroubled to win the Junior Men’s 100 yards.
Margaret Snow of Auckland took first place in the Women’s 100 yards.
Canterbury’s Tony Steele virtually made no race of the Senior Men’s Sprint Event.
There over-enthusiastic fans, by foolishly rushing on to the track and bumping a leading runner at the critical stage of the face, denied Napier of a sub 4-minute mile. Note the position of the offending elbow!

ROVING CAMERA
Mr. Brian Townend and Mr. Walpole Talemaitonga, Seventh-Day Advéntist missionaries from Fiji, who visited Hawke’s Bay recently. Mr. Talemaitonga pioneered education in one area of his country by establishing a school in a combined henhouse and cowshed. Both teach at the Seventh-Day Adventist undenominational boarding school – where five races live together in harmony – on the eastern end of Vanua Levu, the second largest island in the Fijian group.
A group of children proudly displaying articles made by them during the recent Seventh-Day Adventist Church’s North Island Annual Summer Convention at Ardmore. On the front left hand side is Helen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. S. Grey of Havelock North. A total number of 270 children in the 10-15 age group completed similar hobbies.
