Newspaper Article 1980 – Animated bidding

Animated bidding was a feature of a clearing sale held at Mangtarata Station on Friday, according to auctioneers.

Approximately 200 lots were offered for sale mostly from the former Wakarara property of Mr Donald McDonald [Macdonald], current part owner of the station.

Property from the station was also up for auction and there was also a few outside entries.

No collective tally from goods sold is known but representatives of auctioneers, Hawke’s Bay Farmers said some of the articles had gone cheaply while others had been expensive.

The predominantly Central Hawke’s Bay crowd of 200 competed strongly with outside buyers for various antiques offered.

One antique chaff cutter sold for $1600, described by auctioneer as “very good money”.

Photo caption – Three-year-old Hamish McDonald [Macdonald] couldn’t understand why father had put this motorised lawn mower up for auction. Unfortunately for Hamish the final $600 price was a bit above his pocket-money allowance.
