Newspaper Article 2016 – Pip and stone fruit orchard on market

Pip and stone fruit orchard on market

A well-known Hawke’s Bay business, Pernel Orchard, is up for sale for the first time in its history.

Pernel Orchard is a 15.39ha property planted in pip and stone fruit with the addition of extensive infrastructure and is situated on the outskirts of Hastings on Pakowhai Rd and Evenden Rd.

Colliers Rural and Agribusiness horticultural specialist Louise Wake says that given the high profile location, this property offers a multitude of options and has the potential for multiple income streams.

The orchard plantings are mixed age and cover an extensive range of fruit varieties that supply both export and domestic markets.

The property includes a working pack house as a domestic market facility to handle both pip and stone fruit with a 400 bin cool store adding further onsite flexibility.

It also boasts a cafe, a fruit shop with cool store, an accommodation unit, workshop and adjacent sheds and two four bedroom homes built in the 1960s.

“The purpose built fruit shop offers an ideal retail outlet and is adjacent to the popular operating cafe that offers substantial indoor and outdoor dining and constant foot traffic.”

The current owners have also tapped into tourism ventures, running unique orchard tours for local, domestic and worldwide customers including cruise liner and school groups and are year round purveyors at the Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market.

“This is prime horticulture [land] that provides an excellent opportunity for multiple income streams.

“There are no leases in place on any of the infrastructure which allows the incoming purchaser the scope to run the property to suit. There is the option to buy the property and on-sell the infrastructure, retain the property as is and put leases in place or run the whole venture as an owner/operator.

“This is prime horticulture [land] . . . that provides an excellent opportunity for multiple income streams. We expect to see a lot of interest.”

The property is to be auctioned on July 21.
