Pekapeka Planting

If you drove past Pekapeka Wetland recently you may have seen lots of students planting native plants. They were helping the Regional Council with the restoration project at the wetland. Students, teachers and parents from Omakare [Omakere] School got the planting off to a good start with cabbage trees and flaxes grown by students at Oueroa School.

The following week Pukehou students, teachers, parents and helpers planted over 200 plants which had been grown by students at Hastings Central and Oueroa Schools.

Donna Miller, coordinator of the Trees in Schools programme, said all the students and helpers worked really hard, digging holes, planting trees, watering and mulching. “Everyone had a great time and no-one fell in the water!”. Donna hopes the plants will have a 70% survival rate.
