MARY BELL

the Student Prince

BASED ON A PLAY called “Old Heidelberg” “THE STUDENT PRINCE” is perhaps the most perennially popular.

As a remarkable combination of music, plot and atmosphere it is unique.

Its bitter-sweet story is lightened with a bountiful display of Sigmund Romberg’s most enchanting music, and its grace and sentiment possess a sunny quality that few operettas approach.

The four acts of “The Student Prince” trace the design of a love affair, and throughout the plot Romberg has generously sprinkled a series of effortless ballads that sway with the graciousness of the vanished era they depict.

RAY DALTON as PRINCE KARL FRANZ.

The charming “Golden Days,” the rousing “Drinking Song,” the sentimental “Deep In My Heart” and “Just We Two” are as attractive a series of songs as any operetta ever boasted. The famous “Serenade,” with its hint of moonlight on Heidelberg town youth and romance, is perhaps his greatest.

The product of one of Romberg’s most prolific periods, “The Student Prince” is also one of his finest and most representative works.

In “The Student Prince” a magic formula was uncovered so effective as to seem not a formula at all, and so elusive that no one has since discovered quite the same balance. Music, youth, romance, the tradition of a proud old university – all these were blended with an extraordinary skill to produce one of the operatic classics of our time.

JUDY SMITH as KATHIE

Our Producer

The Society has been fortunate indeed in obtaining the services of Laurie Swindell as Producer for its 1960 production, “The Student Prince.”

Mrs. Swindell has had considerable experience over a number of years in repertory work, and has taken part in and produced many stage shows. She is also well known for her work in radio.

Musical comedy has been a new experience for her, and a major undertaking. We trust that in the many successes yet to come she will be happy to assist the Society as its Producer.

LAURIE SWINDELL

MAY MACDONALD

The Society is deeply grateful to May MacDonald for her untiring efforts in this year’s production of “The Student Prince” and the major success of “Show Boat” and “Rio Rita.” May the happy memories of these productions and ail those associated with them endure through the years.

SADIE BROWN as GRAND DUCHESS ANASTASIA.
JAMES PAXIE as LUTZ.

For the all-important task of designing, the Company has been fortunate in retaining the services of these four talented people. The glamour, spectacle and success of our productions are a result of their behind-the-scenes skill and co-operation.

So long as the Society can call upon their services and skill as Key Designing Personnel, we shall count ourselves fortunate.
