Te Mata Times

LEFT: A peep into the past for Havelock North residents.

This photograph of the village was taken back in 1960 for White’s Pictorial Reference of New Zealand. At that time the population was noted as 3100.

“This pleasant Hawke’s Bay town has been known as ‘the village’ but today it has far out-stripped the village-like appearance.

“There are some of the finest private schools and residences with commanding views on the hillside slopes and gardens flourish in the suitable climate,” the book says.
