ATHLETES’ CHANCES

Rona Tong’s Record Breaking Hurdling

SHARPLEY GETS PLACE

(By Telegraph – Own Correspondent.)
AUCKLAND, This Day.

The chief features of Friday’s athletic events were Pullar’s great mile, and the ease of the wins of Fitzsimmons and Quinn in the 100 yards heats, Fitzsimmons repeating again in the furlong. Rona Tong hurdled magnificently to break the record. Sharpley won under difficulties, his leg troubling him from the fourth hurdle onwards.

Driscoll had a close call in the walk, but the style of the two behind him was questionable over the last half-lap.

Begley ran well in the hardest heat of the 440 hurdles and just failed to qualify.

Johnson cleared 10ft. 6in. in the pole vault and then broke four cross bars in succession, these efforts providing the Vice-Regal party with great amusement.

To-day Fitzsimmons and Quinn look likely to divide honours in the 100 yards with Bainbridge, who is also their danger in the 220 yards. In the absence of Boot, Langley may get placed in the 880 yards. The women’s relay appears Auckland’s, who have four fast girls.

Hawke’s Bay’s chances in the medley relay are particularly bright.

The weather is dull but fine and the track holding after overnight rain.
