Legend of Te Mata O Rongokako, The Sleeping Giant
Notes
Illustrated by Sophie Blokker
Description
Rongokako is a giant who regularly terrorises the pā of the Heretaunga tribe, stealing their food and setting fire to the houses, until he falls in love with the chiefteness Hinerakau. The chief of the tribe asks Rongokako to bite a path through the hills to Waimarama before he’ll consent to the marriage, but the giant chokes on a piece of earth and dies, falling in such a way that the shape of the giant can still be seen today in the hills east of Havelock North.
