Sursum Corda – Woodford House Chapel
Description
From the cover –
Lucy Hogg was born in Christchurch. She went to school there and in Auckland. From the Diocesan School she entered Newnham College, Cambridge in 1924. She read History and was well placed in the Historical Tripos in 1927.
These stimulating years were followed by four years teaching at Sherborne in Dorset. In 1931 she returned to take charge of the History at her old school in Auckland. In 1937 she came to Woodford House as First Assistant.
Miss Hogg loves teaching and she now teaches adults who have reading problems. At Woodford she found her power of organisation was extended – making the timetable for instance was a challenge, not a chore.
In 1948 she became Headmistress, a post she held until 1963. During these years she still taught history and this gave her direct contact with many girls, but she also worked in many other ways to help their development as citizens of the future. She loved the school chapel and loved speaking to the girls there.
In 1963 Miss Hogg retired to Napier, but to her surprise she was soon appointed Headmistress of Hukarere School. Here there were problems of a new kind, but again a most interesting life. Ex-staff and old girls gave her help and the link between Hukarere and Woodford was strengthened.
At the end of 1969 Miss Hogg retired again and since then she has been involved in much voluntary work. In 1980 she was presented with a Civic Award for voluntary community service by the Napier City Council. She lives in a charming small house on Bluff Hill. Her chief hobby is reading.
