“Mr John William McCormack, well known in Hastings for more than 50 years as a race horse breeder, poultry-keeper and factory worker, died on Thursday 6th. October 1960, He was 76.
McCormack born and educated in Nelson. He lived for a while on the West and at Paremata, Wellington before coming to Hastings more than 50 years ago.
He worked for the Elite Bacon Company, Stortford Lodge, from 1917 to 1936, including the period of the 1931 Hawkes Bay earthquake, as a general hand became very proficient with his Bacon Curing and his small goods – Having learnt this in his youthful years in Nelson – His Employer being Mr Cash Ferry, also brother Mart was there at the same time He was also at the cable station at Farewell Spit.
After leaving the Elite Bacon Company he worked for Wattle’s for some years, as yard foreman in charge of boxmaking, before machinery was introduced for the job. He was also employed by the Internal Marketing Department.”
