Photo caption – “INTEROIR [Interior] OF LIMESTONE CAVE. ANAROA”
From “Early Stations of Hawke’s Bay” by Miriam McGregor, 1970 – ‘…Anaroa means “long cave” ….It is thought possible that the valley was once a lake fed by the main spring, and that an earthquake split the rock and allowed the water to escape to form the waterfall. There is an opening near the waterfall which may once have been the entrance to a cave which has now become closed.’
