HAWKE’S BAY WEDDING
WELL-KNOWN MAORI FAMILIES
Engaging the interest of large numbers of both pakeha and Maori, the wedding took place at St. Matthew’s Church, Hastings, on Thursday afternoon, of two popular and highly esteemed young Maori people. The bride was Erina, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ike Robin, of Kohupataki [Kohupatiki], Hastings, and the bridegroom, William Tireni, son of the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett. Bishop of Aotearoa, and Mrs. Bennett, of Kohupataki, Hastings.
The ceremony was perfomed by the bridegroom’s father, Bishop Bennett, assisted by Archdeacon K. E. Maclean, and the Rev. H. Rangiihu. Mr. C. B. Spinney played the wedding music. The altar was simply and beautifully decorated with peach, pink, and white gladioli.
The bride, who was escorted by her father, wore a beautiful trained gown of parchment satin, modelled on Grecian lines, her satin appliqued tulle veil fell from a high coronet of orange blossom to form a second train, and she carried a bouquet of pastel tinted roses and fern.
Four bridesmaids attended the bride, the Misses K. Bennett, J. Thornton, W. Tomoana, and L. Morgan. They were dressed in similarly fashioned gowns of rippled chiffon in pink, mauve, chartreuse, and lemon respectively. Shoulder length veils and flowers were worn, and their bouquets were of contrasting shades.
The bridegroom was attended by his brother, Mr. Henry R. Bennett, as best man and Messrs. Don and Isaac Robin (bride’s brothers), and Edward Bennett (bridegroom’s brother), as groomsmen. The church ushers were Messrs. Alex Brown, Edward Ward, and Tatio Nicholas.
A reception was held at the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Tearooms, where the parents of the bride and bridegroom welcomed about 250 guests.
Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Bennett will make their home at Kohupataki, Hastings.
