The chimes were salvaged from the Post Office tower, destroyed in the 1931 earthquake.
The city’s Coat of Arms was placed above the door in 1956 when Hastings became a city.

In 1995 brass plaques were placed on both sides of the tower to commemorate the 1931 earthquake victims in Hastings and surrounding areas.
In the year 2042 a time capsule, buried next to the clock tower, will be opened with letters from Hastings people, deposited in 2002.
