Description

Notes from Marilyn Jenks –

“Mary, born 1860, and Ann, born 1862, were the two eldest daughters of Peter Brough, born 1833, and Christina Brough née Grant, born 1830. They were born in Scotland before the family emigrated to New Zealand in 1864. Peter and Christina had four more children in Porangahau: Jane, born 1865; Peter, born 1868; Alexander, born 1872, and Isabella, born 1875.

The writing on the back of the [original] photo incorrectly identifies the young girl as the daughter of James and Ann. She is more likely to be Isabella Brough, youngest sister of Mary and Ann. James and Ann’s first child, a boy, was born in 1884, four years after this photo was taken.

Jane Brough married Donald MacKenzie. I believe he and James were brothers. The spelling of Mackenzie also appears as McKenzie in other records and photos.

Mary Brough married Kenneth McLean, born 1843. Their daughter, Jane Isabella, born 1896, was my grandmother.”

William McLean was born in 1880.
The “Duke MacKenzies” had the Porangahau Hotel (The Duke of Edinburgh) at the time of the photo.
