Description

Maraekakaho Station woolshed

Photo caption –

“Woolshed with extra nightshed building on L [left]”

‘The woolshed was built in 1884. The night shed was built, with a grated floor, to keep the sheep (approx. 5000) dry for shearing the following day. An enormous flywheel drove a band for the woolpress, and worked by four to five stalwart fellows, who though taking it by spell and spell about, pour with perspiration, their muscles standing out like cords.’
