Description
Jim Newbigin –
“Where I lived in my early years, on the corner of Hastings Street and Victoria Street.
From left bottom – Tennis court all marked out ready for play. My mother and father were both very good tennis players. Further on, the swimming pool. About 20 yards (15 metres) behind that were a chook house, woodshed; the shed middle back housed the washhouse, tool shed and hothouse for growing tomatoes. On its right was the garage, a playhouse and garden. Two magnificent walnut trees, the house, five bedrooms, two bathrooms, one with black bath and basin, shower and toilet.
Nursery, where we children had our meals, kitchen with gas stove, scullery with an airing cupboard (no fridges in those early days)
for meats etc. Dining room with sliding doors leading into the smokeroom, open fireplace, drinks cupboard that leads into a lounge where my parents entertained, with doors opening out on to a verandah.
Two entrances off Victoria Street, large garden with a sunken garden and a fish pond.
Here we are in 2016 and the whole place has been demolished for the building of a commercial club.”
