Description
Comments from Ralph Spence, in charge of scenery 1939-40 production
Photo 1 –
“Maori meeting house was made to full size and in centre of picture behind a ground row and in front of rostrum can be seen the geyser steaming.
I had a 5 H.P. steam boiler (used for glass house heating) set up outside back of stage door and pipes running into centre stage and controlled steam bursts with a valve on off stage.
Scenery was constructed by R Spence and H Spence in the stand of the Hastings Race course
In scene where “mere” is erupted from the geyser my brother used to lay in behind the ground row, and armed with a leather glove would throw the “mere” out of centre of geyser steam on to centre stage

Photo 3 – “Can see steam rising behind canvas centre stage and midway up back cloth”; taken by Lovell-Smith Photographers, Hastings
