Photo description – “Showing two of the Spit Fire Brigade, in smoke Helmets, during the fire on board the N.Z.S, Company’s steamer Waimate, at Napier, December 3 and 4, 1901, ready to go into the hold of the Waimate. These men took it in turn to go below during the whole of the first night, when some of their fellow-workers were pulled from the hold much exhausted.”
