Photo captions –

“Black poplar giant measuring 5′ 6″ across the base was felled at Pakowhai Road Hastings on Friday morning. It will be used for erecting outhouses on farm at Pakowhai. 40 years old. 20 years to go for social security.”

“CHOPPING IT UP. – measuring 5ft. 6in. across the base, the black poplar contains sufficient timber to build outhouses for a farm at Pakowhai, for which purpose it is intended. The tree was 40 years old. Twenty more years and it could have drawn the social security pension.”
