CHILD SAFETY

Waiwhare Pupils Helped Drive Home Message

THE TRACTOR had one child crushed under its front wheels, another wrapped around the shaft of the post-hole digger. Nearby was a second tractor, a child with its fingers in the fan and another impaled on the prongs of the front-end loader.

No, it was not a multiple tragedy but a demonstration of what can happen when children and tractors mix. It was given by Mr Tony Drummond, of the Heretaunga District Young Farmers’ ‘Club, at the recent Hawke’s. Bay A and P Show.

Models

The “children” were full-size, stuffed models made by the pupils of Waiwhare Primary School in a competition organised by Mr Drummond. Anne Whyte and Kay Lawrence, both of whom made two models, shared first prize; the second prize went to Grant and Stuart Tolley, and third to Sally Smith. All the other young entrants received a cake of chocolate.

In addition to those already mentioned, further models drew attention to the dangers of children riding on tractors and trailers, or sitting on post-hole diggers to add weight, and each had a poster beside it to emphasise the message.

Two more were used in a display on water troughs. Near a covered trough was an uncovered one with a model floating in it beside a decoy duck, and a poster reading “Ducks swim – children drown.”

The “children” were a novel touch that attracted much interest and comment, and gave an already effective display that extra impact which will ensure its message is not soon forgotten.
