Description
The school at Wimbledon, a weatherboard building, was erected in 1891. In this picture by AWS Longley, the children playing outside the building probably include one of his two daughters (in the foreground). The picture was taken in 1908, two years after Longley’s arrival in New Zealand. The fuzziness of the children is probably because they moved during the many seconds it took for Mr Longley’s camera to record the image on a glass-plate negative. The building has been subject to additions over the years. A house for the teacher was attached at the back. The building stands empty today, 2015.
