Obituary

It is with a very deep feeling of regret that the Club records the passing of two of our Life Members who died within a week of one another.

ERIC, (ED) RENOUF:

Ed joined the Club in 1925 playing for our third grade team in that year and again in 1926. He was a member of the Junior team from 1927 to 1932 and played for the Seniors from 1933 to 1935. Ed was committee member for 13 years being Treasurer from 1931 to 1938, Club Captain from 1940 to 1947 and in addition to all these duties was coach to both Junior and Senior teams. In 1940 Ed was made a Life Member of the Club and was appointed President in 1950

In recent years Ed kept in touch with the Club mainly by his presence at our Annual Dinner and has always shown a keen interest in the Club’s welfare.

In addition to his love for Rugby Ed was a keen trout fisherman and as he made his own flies, gained particular enjoyment from dry fly fishing. As the Rev Sefton Cambell [Campbell] informed the congregation, at the funeral service, the Epitaph that Ed said he would like his to be would be ‘gone fishing.’

To his wife Norma and son David the Clubs deepest sympathy.

SELWYN BASIL (SEL) McCARTHY

The tragic death of Sel McCarthy came as a great shock to all who knew him and it will be some time before we are resigned to the fact that the Club has indeed lost a grand stalwart.

Although born in Havelock North, Sels younger days were spent in Waipukurau where he played for the local High School first XV. On leaving school he joined the Waipukurau Old Boys Club playing Junior and Senior football until his premature retirement in 1933, owing to a cartilage operation. He was a Hawke’s Bay Junior and Central Hawke’s Bay Senior rep. and played in Hawke’s Bay rep. trials.

Sel played one game for the Club coming on as a replacement the year after his retirement, However he coached various Club teams from 1934 to 1941, being joint Senior coach in 1947 and Senior team manager from 1949 to 1957. Who will ever forget those team parties that Lola and Sel held in their home, during those years?

Sel was a member of the Clubs management committee for 13 years, being the Clubs Delegate to the Junior Advisory Bd from 1960 to 1966. He was a Vice President of the Club from 1962 to 1968 and the following year joined his brother Les as a life Member of the Club.

During the planning and construction of the Club Rooms Sel regularly attended working bees and for a number of years after completion of the building he acted as a caretaker on a voluntary basis.
Over recent years Sel and Lola have followed their son Lloyd in his Rugby career always giving him and his team great encouragement and very much appreciated advice.

Sel leaves behind a great host of friends and to his wife Lola, daughter Denise and son Lloyd the Club extends its deepest sympathy.

Saturday Morning School Boy Rugby

(By Mick Dewey)
(Secretary Junior Rugby Committee)

This Club has many functions to perform, in its efforts to provide Rugby Football for all those who wish to participate in the sport.

Probably the least known of these functions, and the one in which the club performs extremely well, is in the area of Saturday Morning Boys Rugby, and in particular, the provision of coaches for the ‘Orphans’ teams.

Let me explain what is meant by an ‘Orphans’ team. These are teams made up of boys, from any school, who for some reason or another, (such as, ‘too big for the school team’, or perhaps ‘not good enough to make the team’, or even, ‘no team to play in’,) would not be able to play rugby on a Saturday morning.

It can be seen from this that a team of this type, poses a number of problems which a normal school team does not have. There is no coach, in the form of a teacher readily at hand; there are no School Football jerseys, and week-day practices are generally out because the boys are spread fairly widely throughout various schools. Of these problems the hardest one to overcome is that of finding the coach.

How can one ask a man to become a coach of such a team, fully knowing that you are asking him to take personal charge, every Saturday morning of the football season, anything from 15 to 20 young boys, to marshall them on a specific ground, at a given time, complete in jerseys (washed of course). To impart also to these boys, in some way or other, the basic skills and rules required to play this game of ours, and at the same time he is committed to a full winter season of phone calls from the boys covering such things as ‘is the game cancelled’, ‘can’t play on Saturday’, ‘where are we playing’ and so on.

In my capacity as secretary of the Junior Rugby Committee, I have had to find such men to become coaches, and this year there are four Orphan teams, which has meant that I have had to produce at least four coaches, preferably eight, two to a team. And in this I have been extremely fortunate as the clubs delegate to Saturday Morning Boy’s Rugby, I naturally turned to the club for help, particularly with respect to three of these teams. I must say I received a response far better than I could possibly have expected.

From the Senior Team I have eight players looking after the three teams,

10th GRADE TEAM Coached by Peter Keogh, Robert Dockary and Wayne Smith.

12th GRADE TEAM Coached by Gus Hyslop and Ray Bernie.

14th GRADE TEAM Coached by Richard Hunt, Dave Harding and Bruce Taylor.

In addition to these I have had several offers of help from other players and club members. The interest shown is well illustrated by the fact that Stan Woon offered to take a team, even though he already contributes a great deal of his time to the club.

To get back to these coaches of ours; this club should be well pleased with the efforts of these players, and there can be very little wrong with our club spirit when members are prepared to help so readily. They are to be congratulated and make no mistake, the Junior Rugby Committee are truly grateful, and the boys playing in those teams are very fortunate.

There is one other club member to whom I would like to express my thanks, and that is Dave Turner, for the help he has given me in my search to obtain coaches.

Senior Team
(by Mike)

The Senior team, after a lean time in the middle part of the season, have come back with a vengeance playing some good rugby giving a great deal of pleasure to our new coach, Terry Thornton.

After losing to Clive, the team had a comfortable win over MAC and a very unlucky loss to Taradale by 1 point. (Oh! For a goal kicker – Ed.) It was in this game that a certain player put himself off side with the line umpire after Graham Drummond had scored a 60 yd runaway try, only to find the umpire with his flag up on the half way. The line umpire was having great difficulty keeping his flag up as the anonymous player kept pulling it down time and again

The team have scored a total of 353 points, including 66 tries (the greatest number in the competition), with 137 against.

Team spirit is the best it has been for some time and even on duty day at the club rooms a large percentage stay and ‘clean up’.
(Would all our critics please take note).

The Under 23 Team
(By Red)

The closing stages of the first and commencement of the second round has seen an increased attendance at training, a reshuffle of the backline and some outstanding forward play. This has produced an effective forward-back combination which now has the ball moving swiftly and proficiently along the backline.

Team spirit is high and an unlucky undeserved defeat 13-10 against Tech OB is balanced by the second win over Tamatea 10-9 and a torrid 10-10 draw against Haumoana. A most disappointing 13-10 loss to Waikare is best forgotten, a game of errors giving no indication of the teams recent good form.

The defence pattern of the side, in particular the backline, has shown a 100% improvement, a definite morale booster and instrumental in improving the vital forward and back unit relationship.

If the present form is maintained the team should be successful in the closing games of the second round and enter the knockout [knock-out] competition with spirits high.

The slashing runs of fleetfooted Steve Douglas and Mark Hyett have paved the way for several excellent tries and in future games we can look forward to some exciting back play.

The Under 21 Team
(By Dennis)

Since the last Akina the Under 21 team have managed only one win this being against Eskview by 16-4. However all the other games have been very close with the boys really fighting hard for the points. The odds are usually heavily against this team mainly because of the disadvantage in weight and age they have to give away. It is just a little pity that they are not playing in the Under 19 competition where they would be more evenly matched.

However, with the excellent turn-out at practices and the team spirit it could be said that here is a championship team in the making next year.

We are very pleased to have gained the services of Graeme Hope whose football has been tremendous and points to a bright future. This also applies to Pat Castles, Peter Monihau, Tony Curd, Stuart Beattie and Mark Bishop.

Two matches that were very close, against Napier OB and Celtic were lost right on full time with our boys leading up till then. When ahead on points the whole team must have a will to win right to the final whistle.

A special thanks to Robt Bell our Team Manager who has done a grand job for the team and his efficiency has been of great value to both us and the Club.

With “Big Pete” and Ray Harding helping out in the forwards and with Shuker, Harris and Gunn playing well we dominated the opposition in the forwards allowing our backs to score 5 tries. S. Retirement of Prominent Senior Player

Keith Murton.

A familar [familiar] face missing from the Senior A team this year has been Keith Murton, who has retired from competitive rugby. Keith has given this Club wonderful service over the past nine years which began back in 1964 after leaving the Hastings High School and joining our Colts team, in the junior grade.

Playing as full back, he gained Hastings Rep honours in 1964 and in 1965. Also in 1965 he was selected to take part in the Hawke’s Bay Junior Rep trials even though still playing in the Club’s Colts team. In 1966/67 Keith played in the highly successful Old Boys Junior team gaining Hastings Rep honours.

In 1968 the Senior Reserves competition was inaugurated with Keith playing fullback for the Old Boys Team, gaining, once again Rep honours. The next year Keith moved into our A team where he continued to play until 1972.

In 1970 he kicked 102 points for his team demonstrating his reliable boot and with his steady play, made him a valuable member of Old Boys teams.

Keith has regularly attended Club social functions and recently has has contributed towards the drawing up of the plans for the proposed new Squash Courts. This work has taken up much of his time with very little expense to the Club.

Although now living in Napier we know that Keith will always follow the Navy Blues and we all hope that we see him, and his wife Clare at many more of our Club functions.

New Faces

Graeme Elliott.

The new face among the loose forwards which has appeared recently in our Senior team belongs to Graeme Elliott, from Gisborne. A most lively flanker he has demonstrated in just a few games his true worth and we hope to see him in the Old Boys jersey for sometime to come.

He began his Rugby at Oratia in Auckland where for two years in succession he gained rep selection in the Auckland Primary Schools Team. From Auckland he moved to Gisborne where he played fullback for Gisborne High School, in 1966. After leaving school he joined the Ngatapa Club where he spent a season, playing third grade and in 1968 he moved to the Junior team as a loose forward.

Graeme changed Club’s in 1969 and played for the Rangatira Senior team being Captain in 1972. In 1970/71 he gained rep selection in the Poverty Bay B team being appointed Captain in 1971. A highlight of Graeme’s career so far has been an invitation to play for the Olympians in 1971. This team comprised five All Blacks and played against a combined Poverty Bay-East Coast side.

We wish Graeme all the best and trust he will be in Hastings for some time as we all realise what a very capable player he undoubtedly is.

Graeme Drummond

Occupying the second five position in the Senior team this year Is Graeme Drummond. Graeme has come to Old Boys from Christchurch and is at present teaching at Te Hauke School.

He originally attended Buller High School playing in the 1st XV in 1969 The following year Graeme moved to Christchurch and joined the Albion Under 19 team. In 1971 he moved into the forwards and played as a prop in the Teachers College Junior team.

However 1972 saw him back to his old position in the Abion [Albion] Senior Reserve team in the Christchurch competition.

His most memorable game this year must surely have been against Taradale when he ran all of 60 yards to score what would have been the

winning try only to find the touch judge had ruled him out – a debatable point!! (refer to the Senior Teams notes).

Trevor Trew

For the first time in many years the Club has had to find a new full-back for the Senior A team. Fortunately we had in Trevor Trew a talented utility back who was promoted from last years Junior team to fill the position. However with injury plaguing him for most of the season, it is only now that he is finding form, with his goal kicking ability an added boost to the team.

He attended Hastings Boys High and played for the 2nd XV in 1969. The following two years he missed playing Rugby while attending the Smedley Farm Training School at Tikokino.

In 1972 Trevor joined Old Boys and played as first five in our Junior team, where he gained Hastings rep honours, and won the Sub-Union Cup for the most promising Junior player. Early season fitness and a burning enthusiasm gained him selection in our Senior A squad as a talented utility back, this year.

H.H.S.O.G. Netball Club
(By Helen)

The Club would like to congratulate the following players on their inclusion in representative teams.

Mary Gallagher, Jocelyn McNamara and Murdene Vennell – H.B. Major to play in NZ. tournament at Napier from 20-25th August.

Joan Hastie, Barbara Nicholson, Colleen Palmer and Lorna Smith – Hastings 1st grade team for Kurungaituku Tourn. at Rotorua on 31st August and 1st Sept.

Corinne Woon – Captain of 3rd grade rep. team.
Jenny Pita (H.B. Major) – who has now withdrawn.

Special mention here is warranted for Margeret [Margaret] Lumb, Wendy Boyle, Anne-Maree Gray, Robyn Baker and Heather Black, who were rep. trialists in their respective grades.

Further congraulations [congratulations] go to Pat Krebs and Judith Monteith who have obtained their Hastings Umpires badges this season.

HUIAS

On Queens Birthday weekend Huias won the Senior section of the Manawatu Tournament and brought home the Graham Cup for the 2nd year in succession. Their matches were not all easy wins and they were very fortunate to win the semi-final against Massey A, especially when they trailed the lead for the whole game until the last few minutes when they drew level and then took the lead.

The final match against Freyberg Old girls was a tense, hard fought game.

It really was a thrill for them to win and thanks went to Ainsley Double who played for them as M. Vennell was unavailable.

Until 14th July Huias were the only unbeaten side in the H.B. Senior event. During the season there have been some outstanding displays of teamwork by Huias and it is hoped that they can now win the few games left in the last round, to take the HB. Shield.

Players who have been consistently outstanding are Jocelyn McNamara in her positional play and goal shooting, Barbara Nicholson who plays a very well controlled game at centre and Mary Gallagher in her defence work and coaching.

ROBINS

Players in this team are really trying hard, but with the numerous misdirected passes etc. the opposing teams in many matches has won easily.

It is disappointing to see Akinas are not doing as well as they were They were the only Hastings team to reach the semi-final in the B grade at the Manawatu Q.B. tourament [tournament] and were just beaten by 2 goals. Until last month they had won all their matches, but this is not so now.

There has been a general improvement in this team, not only in their ability, but also in their understanding of the game. Robyn Baker has been a very reliable WA and has improved in play.
