Born Hastings, 5 April 1927, son of Eric Dudley Anderson and Margaret Evelyn (née Craig); married Barbara Lillias Romaine Wright (see Anderson, Barbara), daughter of Dr Cecil Govett Romaine Wright, 1951; two sons
Education: Mahora Primary, Hastings’ Hastings High School; Royal Navy College, Dartmouth ; Royal Navy College, Greenwich; Joint Services College, Latimer (UK); Royal College of Defence Studies (UK) 1972.  Cadet, Royal NZ Navy, 1944; Training, service with RN, 1944-1949; Lieutenant RNZN, returned to New Zealand 1949; War service in Korea (HMNZS Rotoiti), 1950-51; Navigator Specialist, Navigator HMS Vanguard, HMNZS Lachlan, 1952-1954; exchange service, RN, Squadron Navig 3rd Destroyer Squadron, HMS Saintes, 1957-1959; Commander 1960; CO HMNZS Taranaki, 1961; Defence and Naval Staff, Wellington, 1963-1968; CO HMNZS Waikato, 1968-1969; Captain, CO, HMNZS Philomel, 1969-1970; Commander, Naval and Defence Staff, 1973-1978; Rear-Admiral, Chief of Naval Staff, 1978-1980; Vice Admiral, Chief of Defence Staff, 1980-1983 (retired).
