Minutes of the previous Annual General Meeting having been circulated were taken as read and confirmed as a true record of the proceedings of that meeting.

Annual Report. Mr. G.E. Mills presented his account of the proceedings for the year, pointing out to the members the activities which had taken place, the most important being the various taxation steps implemented, G.S.T. being the biggest change to take place. The restructering [restructuring] of the Retailers’  Federation with the subequent [subsequent] merger with the Wholesale Hardware Merchants, resulting in the new body named ‘The Retail Wholesale Merchants Association (Inc.), being incorporated in early June 1987.  Mr. Mills gave members a brief resume of how this move effected this association, stating that for the future so far as could be seen, the Hawke’s Retailers’ Association would continue to function, but with a different style of funding.

Following further comment on the report Mr. Mills moved the adoption of the report, seconded by Mr. Rob Duckworth – carried unanimously.

Annual Accounts.  These having been circulated were taken as read and were adopted as audited, unanimously.

Life Membership.
At this juncture Mr. Mills said that had had an important announcement to make, he then said that Jack Olsen who had served the association well and faithfully for

almost 22 years, was retiring from the position on the 31st. July 1987, after much consideration of the most appropriate reward that could be made for the long service Jack had given the committee had unanimously agreed that he be honoured with Life Member-ship of the Hawke’s Bay Retailers’ Association and accordingly that be made an Honorary Life Member.  Mr. Mills said that as the rules required that life membership could only be bestowed upon ‘Retailers’ it had been necessary to obtain special permission to enable the objective to be achieved, and it was his pleasure to so move, Mr. C.H. Blackmore seconded the motion and took the opportunity to support the motion as follows:  He advised members that Jack Olsen had joined the H.B. Association in October 1965. in time to take charge of the secretarial administration of the 1986 annual conference to be held at the Chateau Tongariro, in March.  Commenting on many aspects of that event, and many others during the lengthy period until this a.g.m. making particular reference to the secretar’s [secretary’s] dedication to the work required to be done.
Mr. Rob Duckworth concluded the supporting comments, by emphasising the assistance available to all members at any time, including matters which were far beyond the scope of duties expected from a secretary, he said he was pleased to be associated with the mover and seconder, the motion was then put and carried unanimously by acclamation.  Jack Olsen then replied Hi – Lighting the wonderful support he had received from each president and executive, and the members, during his service, pointing out also the many happy times he had enjoyed in the company of a great number of retailers, he reminded the gathering that there were occasions, when like all humble secretaries’ he needed a what he referred as a ‘shake-up’ which resulted in improved performence.  He said that whilst he was speechless that he should receive this honour, he knew of no other reward which would have made him so happy.  The only disappointment he had was the inability of his wife, Jean, to attend because of sickness, on her behalf he received a bueatiful [beautiful] floral arrangement.

Change of Rules.
Notice having been in accordance with the rules, the following resolution was passed: ‘That the rules of the Association are altered as to rule 10 (a) “Delete Julu [July] and substitute April”.
