HASTINGS ROTARY CLUB

CLUB SERVICE COMMITTEE

Report for 1986/87 Rotary Year

It has indeed been a great pleasure to have been Chairman of the Club Service Committee for the past year.

We are extremely fortunate in our Club to have a membership of fellows who are so willing to assist in the weekly running of the Club. This results in our Club running like clockwork each week for the benefit of all members.

I wish to thank our programme committee for organising a variety of most interesting speakers – this is surely one of the hardest jobs in the Club, but was carried out with the utmost efficiency by Jim Hurford and his team.

Our Venue Committee are to be thanked for the task they perform in setting up the room for our meeting each week – thankyou to Cyril, Bill, Hans, John, Eric and Bert. To other members of the Venue Committee, Marshall Ted, Host John, Fellowship Brian and Norman, Cashier Gordon and Attendance Ray, my thanks for a job well done.

Sergeants At Arms for the year were very original in their presentation and were therefore a highlight of each meeting. One cannot help but be amazed at the quantity and quality of the material that comes to light in the Sergeants Sessions. On behalf of the Members, thanks to Alan Walker and the other Sergeants for the way in which you have performed your rather demanding weekly duties.

Secretary Frank, and Treasurer Colin – we truly do appreciate the work both of you do behind the scenes. On behalf of the Club, may I thank you once again for the great job you have both done.

Finally I wish to acknowledge the leadership of President Robbie who has been most efficient in dealing with the day-to-day running of the Club. This has been portrayed in the quality of our weekly meetings. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Ngaire on behalf of the Ladies of Rotary, for the very successful Social Occassions [Occasions] she has organised for the Ladies during this past year.

SUMMARY OF COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES 1986-1987.

1.   The inaugural bowls charity tournament was held in September with the proceeds of some $400-00 being remitted to Guide Dogs. Special thanks to John Eddington.

2.   A snooker evening was held at the County Club in November for our fellowships.

3.   The Town & Country Forum was held in February at Waimarama at the farm of Jan & Malcolm Gilray. This was much enjoyed by the goat breeders who were our guests. The evening was greatly facilitated by the efforts of the Twin City Motors team manning the barbecues. To Charlie Trask and Peter Young who organised a most successful night, our sincere thanks.

4.   A ladies night was held in March at The Great Wall of Buck in Napier.

In April we supported two charity drives providing drivers for the Red Cross and manning the D.I.C. collecting station for the day for the St. Johns Ambulance.

5.   In March we hired a bus and took some old people on a drive to the Twyford Hall where we had a sumptuous afternoon tea and a sing song.

6.   Finally one of our members participated in providing a random sampling into the community’s attitude to crime and punishment.

HASTINGS ROTARY YOUTH COMMITTEE REPORT – 1986-87

The Youth Committee has devoted a great deal of its time and energy to organising an inaugural Fantasyland Music Carnival which was eventually held on the 21st February, 1987.

This required a great deal of co-ordination and for the eventual success of the carnival, thanks must go to President Robbie for his continued support and encouragement; John Mills for co-ordinating all the Fantasyland activities; Graham Parsonage, of 93FM, for his enthusiasm and financial support; Christine Symes, President of the Hastings Rotoract [Rotaract] Club, and all the Rotoracters [Rotaracters] who gave her such enthusiastic support; To members, not only of the Youth Committee, but also the Club  who rolled up on the day to give their support; and finally, to John Snowling, of Hastings Citizens Band, who provided the initial inspiration for the carnival.

The emphasis of the day was on fun, rather than Fundraising, but the eventual profit showed that the two can go hand-in-hand. Many of the groups involved expressed enthusiasm about the concept and were hoping to perform again. We look forward to a repeat carnival on the 12th March, 1988.

The Youth Committee recommended the support of Darren Shand and Raan Apatu to Outward Bound.

Liaison with the Rotoract Club was excellent through the year, but it was with some concern that we witnessed the loss of a large group of senior members of the Club, who have provided sterling service over the years. The loss of young people from Hawke’s Bay will make it difficult to replace these enthusiastic members, and the support of the Hastings Rotary Club is again sought to encourage recruitment.

The involvement with the carnival certainly helped fellowship within the committee, and I should like to thank again President Robbie, and all members of the committee and the Club for their support during the year.
