Annual Report 1987-88 Community Service Committee

REPORT OF COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMITTEE

FOR YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 1988

I am pleased to report on the activities of this Committee for the past year and give hereunder a resume of our various ventures: –

BOWLS DAY 28 SEPTEMBER 1987
Those members who participated had a very enjoyable day, but due to lack of numbers from our Club, it was necessary to invite members from other Rotary Clubs and from the Kia Toa Bowling Club to make the tournament worthwhile. Our thanks go to John Eddington and Owen Johnstone for organising this.

CHRISTMAS PUDDINGS
These were again distributed to members and continue to prove popular.

ARTHRITIS APPEAL 5 OCTOBER 1987
Drivers were provided for this evening appeal and the response from members was good.

ROTARY HANDKERCHIEFS
Organised by Bob Parrant, these were al quickly sold and provided a small profit to Club funds.

STEAM TRAIN VENTURE
This was planned as a full Club project with the profits to go to “Polio Plus”. However, we were extremely disappointed that this venture did not get off the ground. (Or perhaps it would be correct to say it went off the rails). A lot of time was spent, particularly by Royden Walker in an endeavour to have a share of the weekend running of the train in Hastings and Napier. Only towards the end of negotiations did we find that the Club would have to pay $2000 towards costs with the possibility that with inclement weather, the venture could run at a loss.

TOWN AND COUNTRY FORUM 9 FEBRUARY 1988
This was undoubtedly the success story of the year, with a very enjoyable function being held at the Hastings Racecourse and the Hawke’s Bay orchardists as our guests. It was, however, disappointing to receive a poor response from the orchardists, but Rotary members supported this function very well. The food was excellent and in Brian Aitken we had arranged an excellent speaker.

Whilst the cost was more than anticipated nevertheless was a worthwhile P.R. exercise.

VISIT TO RUSSIAN SHIP MARCH 1988
Despite strenuous efforts this had to be called off last moment because of the non-arrival of the ship at the designated time.

CRANFORD HOSPICE STREET APPEAL 8 APRIL 1988
We were pleased to have sufficient response from members of the Club to man one collection point, all day, from 9.00 a.m. to 5 p.m.

RED CROSS – HOUSE TO HOUSE APPEAL 23 APRIL 1988
This was not well supported with only six members making themselves available.

SNOOKER EVENING – 11 MAY 1988
Twenty three members enjoyed an evening of fellowship and fun, at the County Club.

An excellent supper was provided to round off what proved to be a great nights entertainment.

OLD FOLKS OUTING – 14 MAY 1988
Approximately 30 old folk were taken in Nimons Bus on a sightseeing trip around the outskirts of Hastings and enjoyed afternoon tea at the Twyford Hall. The Raupare C.W.I. did an excellent job with the catering requirements and John Mullany played the piano for a sing-song afterwards.

Our thanks go to those who provided transport from the Old folks’ residences to the bus pick-up point and return.

The last meeting for the year was held at Gordon Lee’s Canton Restaurant on Tuesday 14 June 1988. In all, 31 persons attended. We were pleased to have President Rod, Vice President Ian, Secretary Frank and their wives along to share in a very enjoyable evening.

I would like to express my thanks to the Committee for the tremendous support they gave throughout the year. The average attendance at meetings was nine, proof enough that those members allocated to the Community Service Committee made their contribution to the Rotary year.
