Annual Report 1989-90

PRESIDENTS ANNUAL REPORT 1990/1991 [1989/1990]

LADIES & GENTLEMEN

It is my pleasure to present the 62nd Annual Report of the Hastings Croquet Club. It has been a very busy but rewarding year.

Firstly, I would like to thank my Committee who have worked untiringly for the benefit of the club, each & everyone of you have supported me in whatever capacity you were able, and I do appreciate your loyalty. In October, we said good-bye to Irene Cornish who moved to Dannevirke, but her place on Committee was filled by John Salisbury.

Thru the generousity [generosity] of members of this club, we were able to install the irrigation system during the winter months, & in early September it was turned on, what a great asset it is just to have water when needed at the press of a switch. Thank you to all.

During the season, another Implement Shed was donated to our club by a member who wished to remain anonymous, with the guidance & expertise of Derek Hussey it was erected on the Omahu Road boundary.

Cups & saucers & a large teapot were purchased for the kitchen, also 4 sets of Dawson 2000 Balls, and a set of hoops, all for the benefit of you, our members. The Hastings Croquet Club is included in a Neighbourhood Watch Group that operates in McLeod St. I attended a meeting at the end of last year, & recently we met again, and l was amazed at the burglaries in our area, including our own clubhouse, which seems to be an ongoing operation at present. Please make sure when you leave the premises to check carefully that everything is locked up, & so, make it more difficult to vandalise our property.

To our greenkeeper and his willing band of helpers, you have done a wonderful job. Our mower man, Bill Dougan is still attending our lawns, & works very diplomatically with our members. Over the season, our lawns have been rolled several times, sprayed for worms, and for weeds around the headlands, scarified [scarified], fertilized, topdressed, and also hand weeded by lady members. Thank you all.

I am pleased to say that we have gained 7 new members this season, plus 5 members transferred from other clubs. Our membership now stands at 68, having had 3 resignations for the year. Mrs Lily Young & Mr Douglas Hunter have changed from full playing members to Honorary members.

In August, we learnt of the death of Marjory Shand, who, was.[,] at that time an Honorary member of our club, but, in earlier years held office. A message of sympathy was sent to her relatives.

Fund-raising for the year was in the form of Winter Weekend Tournament, which proved very popular, thank you David.

Monthly Sales Tables – capably manned by Jean & Peg. Thank you for the effort you put into this – Sale of pumpkins, – luncheon & snowball raffle – cake sale-trash treasure and used clothing – grocery raffle – 2 garage sales – and our weekly raffles.

Thank you to Tournament Managers and helpers, and to all who gave their time, to be in the kitchens for these occasions.

To our Tea Convenor Nancy Willis, thank you for your untiring service. I must make mention to 2 people we never see, but who have supported our club, namely Mrs Joy Rigby for her generousity to our sales table, and to Clive Dillon, who has kept us in rolls of white paper throughout the year. Thank you to you both.

Congratulations to the winners of our Club Competitions which were very well supported this year. To our 2 Life Members, Lotchen Ritchie & Ernie Williams, also Lena Lambert & Dorothy Unwin, thank you for the knowledge that you have shared with us, hope to have you around for a long time yet.

Several Committee members are not seeking re-election, for your co-operation during your term, thank you. Thank you to our Auditor, Mr Douglas Hunter.

The past year has been a happy one for me, and I look forward to the coming 1990-1991 season, and another term as your President.

Thank you for your support, and know we will go from strength to strength.

N Harrison
President.   12/5/90.
