PRESIDENT’S REPORT 1993-94 SEASON
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is with much pleasure that I present to you the 66th Annual Report of the Hastings Croquet Club (Inc.)
It has been a busy season, with so much achieved by the work of your Committee and Club members. Our revenue during the past season has come in from Winter Tournaments, Garage Sale, Barbecues, Sales Tables, Raffles and other Mini-Tournaments. The North Island Championships held from 4th-12th December was very lucrative for our Club and I say thank you to everyone who made themselves available to help in whatever capacity; without you, the members of this Club, we would never have achieved what we have.
The Hastings Permanent Building Society continues to support and sponsor our Club, with $250:00 for a tournament and $100:00 for an Open Day. Over and above this, they subsidise our subscriptions by $20 per member with accounts.
During the past season we have farewelled several members, firstly June and Frank Booth, who moved to take up residence in Bulls, and Fran and John Salisbury, who decided to cross the Tasman to live in Australia. In December, 1993, Kath and Ernie Williams moved to Whangarei to be near their daughter, likewise in March, Dorothy Unwin moved to Pukekohe to be close to relations. They have all left a gap in this Club and are missed very much.
On January 23rd 1994, this Club had the pleasure of the company of Eru Pederson and his two friends, Melanie and Maurice from America. A very pleasant social afternoon was shared and we were all impressed with their friendliness and outgoing manner.
A new flag adorns our flagpole, thanks to the generosity of Adie and Karl Haswell who supplied material and Beryl Turner who was responsible for the making.
Our thanks to Don McNeilage who kindly donated and laid linoleum in the men’s washroom and for the other help he has given since joining our Club.
During the season the lawns have been fertilised and sprayed several times for fungus and generally maintained. Thank you to all members who have helped; also thanks, Karl, for keeping the lines marked.
The two lawns in McLeod Street have been maintained by members. I must thank John Cody, Ray Marsh and John McKenzie who have put in many man hours and I thank you all very much.
To Bill Dougan, our mower man, thank you for your dedication in your work and recently undertaken extra work as, through ill health, our Green Superintendent has been unable to do quite so much.
It is quite sad to see the graffiti on our fences, but it seems we are living in a different world and other people’s property is no longer private.
Although our membership is down, we still have 63 full playing members, 8 Hon-Playing Members and 3 Hon. Non-Playing Members.
Congratulations to all competition winners and to Karl Haswell for gaining a place in the Arthur Ross event.
My sincere thanks to Captain Janet Hulena, Vice-Captain Karl Haswell, our Secretary and Assistant Secretary, Beryl Steenson and Val Clarkson, Treasurer Margaret Hussey, Tea Convenor Greta Dodd, also to our Publicity Officer, H.B. Delegate, Sales Table ladies, Coaching Co-Ordinator, New Members’ Secretary, ladies who tend the gardens and Committee Members. You have all given your time and energy so freely and with such enthusiasm it has been a pleasure for me to work with you all.
My thanks to Douglas Hunter for auditing our finances over several years. He has now retired from this position. Once again, thank you for the time you have given to our Club.
To Executive and Committee Members who are not seeking re-election, I thank you for your support and loyalty during your time in office.
I wish you all a happy and successful 1994-95 season.
Noeline Harrison N Harrison 7 May 1994
