HAWKE’S BAY EARTHQUAKE
75TH ANNIVERSARY
1931-2006

A 10-day Hawke’s Bay-wide commemoration of the disastrous 1931 earthquake that destroyed cities and lives, and shattered communities. This anniversary of New Zealand’s greatest natural disaster will be one of Hawke’s Bay’s largest-ever events and will be celebrated region-wide, with an exciting programme which concludes with the 18th Brebner Print Art Deco Weekend.

THE STATISTICS:

10.46am, February 3rd, 1931 – 7.8 on the Richter Scale
15-20 Kms North of Napier 2.5 minutes duration with a 30 second lull in the middle.
Aftershocks: Approx 150 in the 12 hours that followed
525 over the 14 days that followed.
Deaths: Napier 162, Wairoa 93, Hastings 3
