FOREWORD

By Mayor of Waipukurau.

It gives me great pleasure on behalf of the Citizens of Waipukurau to extend a cordial welcome to the visiting Australian Hockey Representatives, and to express my satisfaction at the choice of Waipukurau as the venue of the Representative match against Hawke’s Bay. I trust that our visitors will take the opportunity of seeing as much of our Town and District as is possible in the time at their disposal, and will enjoy their stay with us. I understand that a comprehensive programme has been arranged for their entertainment and I take this opportunity of thanking the organisations responsible, and feel confident that all Citizens will assist in making the occasion a memorable one for all concerned.

Yours faithfully,
J. McCARTHY, Mayor.

APPRECIATION

By the Chairman of Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association.

On behalf of the members of the Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association, I extend to the Australian Universities’ team a very hearty welcome and trust they have an enjoyable time in our district. The fact that they are making sporting history by being the first overseas team to play in Waipukurau adds further interest to their visit.

I would like to thank the following: The Mayor and Councillors, Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and Central H.B. Rugby Sub-Union. Our most grateful thanks also, to those kind people who have made available billets for our visitors. Without the assistance of these people and organisations, this visit would not have been possible.

E. LARRINGTON, Chairman.

RULES OF HOCKEY – EXPLANATIONS OF ELEMENTARY POINTS.

For the benefit of those who have no first-hand knowledge of hockey, the following elementary points from the rules of the game should be of assistance in appreciating to-day’s match.

(1)   Sticks must not be raised above shoulder height.

(2)   A goal cannot be scored from outside the Circle.

(3)   An attacker is offside if there be fewer than three defending players between himself and the back line, and is nearer his opponent’s goal line than the ball at the moment it is hit or rolled in. No player, however, can be offside in his own half.

(4)   The ball must not be intentionally kicked stopped with the feet (except by the goal keeper), or carried forward.

(5)   Charging, pushing, shoving, tripping, also holding or striking at an opponent’s stick are all disallowed.

(6)   Obstruction:   A player shall not obstruct by interposing his body or his stick between an opponent and the ball.

(7)   Corners are given: (a) when the ball passes over the back line after being struck or touched by a defender; and (b) after a breach by a defender in the circle or in the defenders’ twenty-five if considered deliberate.

(8)   A penalty bully may be awarded if there has been an intentional or unintentional breach inside the circle by a player of the defending team to prevent a goal being scored.
