HOCKEY TOUR OF NEW ZEALAND 1954
PEN SKETCHES OF PLAYERS:
1 – LOUIS HAILEY, 28, Queensland, goalkeeper. Nominated best player for Australian Universities against N.Z. University team in Test match 1951.
2 – RALPH MASSY-WESTROPP, 22, Sydney, fullback. Captain of Sydney University team which he has represented for 4 years. Very steady player with good clearance.
3 – MAX MEANEY, 25, Queensland, fullback. S.A. export to Queensland. Represented S.A. Colts and State team as utility player. A fast, dashing player.
4 – BILL SMITHIES, 19, Tasmania, fullback. A fast, hard hitting player who has represented his State in Schoolboy and Colts competitions.
5 – KEN SUE, 19, Queensland, right half. V-Captain of the Queensland Inter-Varsity team this year. is expected to be one of the most improved players on the tour.
6 – NEVILLE MEANEY, 21, Adelaide, right half. Gained selection in the S. Australian Colts team 1951, and has repped for Adelaide Inter-Varsity for the last three years.
7 – IVAN BARTON, 19, Queensland, Centre half. Represented Combined Universities in 1953 (FIRST YEAR AT Varsity) and 1954. A very clever player; should impress in New Zealand.
8 – ROD CORMIE, 21, Queensland, left half. Player Manager of the team. Has been Manager of Queensland University team for last 2 years. Constructive player.
9 – NEAL BLEWETT, 20 Tasmania, centre half. A fast improving player who has represented Southern Tasmania in the Colts’ team in 1954. Should benefit greatly from the tour.
10 – VICTOR VADIVELOO, 24, Sydney, right wing. Only overseas student in the team. Learnt his hockey in Malaya where he represented his state. Played in 1951 and 1952 State trials.
11 – NEIL DIVETT, 19, Queensland, right half. Represented Queensland University for the last 2yrs. Played brilliant game for Combined Universities Res. against S.A. Colts this year.
12 – ALLAN KEMP, 28, Queensland, Centre forward. Captain of the Queensland University team which won the “Syme” Cup in Adelaide this year. has represented Queensland varsity.
13 – FELIX EMBERSON, 21, Sydney, left-inner. Learnt hockey in Fiji where he represented Suva against Auckland in 1948. Hard straight running forward with good shot from all angles.
14 – COLIN LANE, 19, Tasmania, left-inner. Clever forward with good stick work. Has represented Tasmania Schoolboys at hockey on two occasions.
15 – JACK McCALLUM, 26, Queensland, left-wing. A big match player with brilliant stick work. Played in the Test match against N.Z. University in Sydney in 1951.
PERSONALITIES OF H.B. TEAM.
1 – S. BOYLE. Goal. An experienced player, at present playing for Akina Rovers. Recently played in goal against Poverty Bay for Hawke’s Bay, in a drawn game.
2 – D. HILL. Full Back. An experienced player, has represented Hawke’s Bay on many occasions and displays uncanny stickwork on defence.
3 – L. TOTTY. Full back. Hawke’s Bay’s sole North Island nominee for this season. Has represented Hawke’s Bay on many occasions over the past 4 seasons and is playing sound hockey.
4 – G. HEMA HEMA. Half back. One of the finds of the season. Played his first H.B. game against Poverty Bay. A good sound youth and more should be heard of him in the future.
5 – S. RAWIRI. Centre half has represented H.B. on several occasions. Possesses excellent stickwork and a very solid player on defence.
6 – A. BAIN. (left half) another of H.B.’s youth, has represented H.B. on several occasions and shown marked improvement in positional play. A very adaptable half.
7 – R. NICOL (right wing) has represented H.B. for the past four seasons and possesses excellent stickwork and a fine turn of speed. Combines well with forwards.
8 – I. MORLEY (inside right) a product of Napier Boys’ High School and the youngest player in the Bay team. Played his first rep game last Saturday against Poverty Bay.
9 – C. WILLIAMS (centre forward) has represented H.B. for several seasons, and been a stalwart of hockey in the Bay for many years. Possesses excellent stickwork & combines nicely.
10 – T. TURBITT (inside left) Capt. N.Z. Rep. possesses uncanny stickwork and excellent ball control and has been mainly responsible for the improved standard of hockey in H.B.
11 – L. CASSIN (left wing) another well seasons H.B. rep. nominated for both N.I. and N.Z. in past season. Still playing excellent hockey, displaying uncanny ball control. Very sound.
