The Bay Sports Centre will see the completion of a Council-led redevelopment and revitalisation programme that has seen key sporting, recreational and cultural amenities undergo a renaissance in just a few years.
Local Government’s major commitment to its ratepayers and District residents will always focus in the area of basic and essential services.
But there is a vital role we can play in the field of community participation, and sense of pride, thereby contributing to its health and wealth.

We already know that this venue will attract tournaments and competitions not able to be hosted in Hawke’s Bay currently.
The Project to redevelop the old stadium on Railway Road into a modern indoor stadium and gymnastics venue aims to provide multi-code use; active young person and children programmes, and the attraction of top-level competitors and high numbers of spectators to regional, national – even international – events.
This will see a revenue spin-off across accommodation, food and beverage, retail, travel, tourist and entertainment businesses.
A $4,000,000 project is an expensive one, and Council’s objective is to minimise any loan component, with a preference for a debt-free facility.
The Council is prepared to commit $2,000,000 as its share, and asks you to join in creating a community asset that the Hastings District and Hawke’s Bay can be proud of.

CAR PARKING for users of the new Sports Centre will be a high priority with spaces provided both near the entrance and adjacent to the complex. Night time lighting has been included in the design. Landscaping, signposting and street presentation are also to be improved.
A NEW ENTRY AND RECEPTION AREA will be west facing with a large foyer and space for ticket sales, management offices and first aid rooms. From the foyer, a staircase leads to the first floor, providing access to fixed seating and a new lounge area complete with upgraded kitchen.
A GYMNASIUM to the front of the complex will share reception, changing and toilet facilities with the main stadium. The gymnasium will be purpose built and a viewing gallery from the mezzanine level will offer an uninterrupted view. Large competitions will be held in the main stadium.
A GLAZED VIEWING GALLERY will be a high priority, providing ideal seating for sponsors and VIPs. Located above the new changing rooms, the gallery will be linked to the catering area.
A REMODELLED MAIN STADIUM will provide court and spectator areas spacious enough to host regional, national and international events. A number of fixtures will be able to take place at the same time and a combination of fixed and mobile seating will accommodate up to 3000 spectators. Acoustics, heating, ventilation and lighting will be substantially upgraded for the benefit of both competitors and spectators and to ensure events at the Centre can be easily televised.
NEW CHANGING ROOMS will be provided and the existing rooms refurbished to accommodate various sporting codes and ensure separate facilities are available for a number of competing teams and referees. Public toilets will be separated from competitors rooms for practical reasons and to improve security.
LIVE TELECASTS will be made with ease from the new Sports Centre with designers having ensured such things as line markings and lighting are in line with the requirements of television. TVNZ technical representatives are being consulted before the design is finalised.
