Born Clive, Hawkes Bay, 3 April 1924, son of Jack Lister Brathwaite and Dorothy Beatrice (née Anstis); married Alison Irene Whyte, daughter of Adam Charles and Ida Annie Whyte, 1948; one son one daughter.
Education: Waipukurau District High School; Timaru Boys High School.
3rd Battalion, Wellington Regiment, NZ Army, 1942-1943; No 3 Squadron, Flight Sergeant, Royal New Zealand Air Force 1943-1945; RNZAF, 1947-1955; RNZ Sigs, NZ Army, 1955-1958. NZ Railways, 1939-1942; NZBS, 1959-1962; Dobbs-Wiggins, McCann-Ericson (advertising) 1962-1967; Carlton-Carruthers, 1969-1973; Full-time writing 1973 -.  Otago Daily Times centennial novel contest winner 1961; NZ Literary Fund Award for Achievement, 1961
