From the PRESIDENTS TABLE

My my, how Xmas and New Year rush upon us and then suddenly they’re all over…oh well at least it’s a good family time and for some, holiday time, but us retired people never get a day off. I hope the Festive Season went well for you all.

Since our last Break Out mag a few official and social things have happened.
our last General Meeting in November 2016 was also the Branch 13/HBARC AGM (most office bearer positions remained the same) and Homebrew event (with a good number of entries…home construction is still alive and well).
we held our annual Branch 13 & 25 Xmas Tea
the “Summer Wine Bus Trip” was held, always a great day and a lunch out.

From time to time Branch 13 has some random notices to circulate, we have a ZL2AS reflector to serve this purpose, do log into it even if your mission is just to receive these notices (but you can post notes of your own on it, eg. wanted to buy)…it’s not very busy so you won’t have much incoming traffic from it…sometimes some information requires immediate action rather than waiting for Break Out to arrive. Contact David ZL2DW for log in information.

While I think of it, our IRLP node (# 6793) is back in service (thanks Ross ZL2WRW). Remember that it can be accessed through ‘725 repeater and due to ‘725 being linked to ‘675 it means that the IRLP coverage is both Hawkes Bay and Taupo areas. Enjoy it.

The next Branch 13/HBARC General Meeting is at the Pakowhai Hall, 7-30pm, Wednesday 25 January.

73, Rob ZL2US (Branch 13/HBARC Hastings, President).

Napier Amateur Radio Club

Well, the last two months seem to have fled, not sure where to. Happy New Year to you all.
Being retired now, I have been able to keep an eye on the 6 metre band and have notched up a healthy number of contacts, largely on JT65A, (50.276Mhz), but also some on SSB with many VK stations as well as a few contacts with FK1TS and 3D2AG. The 6M band seems to open almost every day to some part of New Zealand, Pacific islands and Australia, and is best kept track of on http://www.vklogger.com

Your committee met and discussed many items and decided that a few jobs around the Club rooms should be completed, so last Thursday some members gathered to fit the window to the Radio Room, This project went smoothly and now only needs some trims cut and fitted and a paint job. Thanks to those members who attended.

The group also repaired the 40 / 80 metre antenna.

Help will be asked for to complete a final coat of paint on the outside walls, so if you are willing and able, let Wally know, and he can set up a day to complete this task. We are still waiting for a quote for the welding required for the Yagi installation.

The Radio room looks very functional, and now only needs some licensees to use it.

We have a few new initiatives to discuss at the next meeting, so be sure to attend and have a say in your clubs direction.

At the next meeting Errol ZL2IT will also present another interesting talk on his experimental projects, all good stuff.

Rebranding

A ‘light bulb’ went on while reading the ‘District Plan Involvement Matters’ by Douglas Birt ZL1BFS in the November/December 2016 Break In.

In summary ZL1BFS wrote:-
“We are Radio Scientists as we engage in Experimental Science as a Serious Leisure activity!
We are Amateurs because our Serious Leisure activity is done without pay, not done without expertise.”

Possibly to our Radio Scientist tag is reflected in the name of our national body NZART?

The New Zealand Association of Radio Transmitters. “Radio Transmitters” of course refers to the person doing the transmitting not the equipment between the microphone and the antenna (i.e. the transmitter).

At last we don’t have worry about the perennial search for the origins of the word ‘HAM’ as it doesn’t describe us at all.

Emission tests

The following link provides details of FCC 97.307(e) emissions tests performed on a Baofeng UV5RA, Yaesu FT-1D, Baofeng UV-82HP, and a Tytera MD-380: https://imgur.com/a/up2ne
Two of the four transceivers tested were found to be non-compliant – Beware!

Mark ZL3AB actual bandplans.

We all know, or should do, the New Zealand ham bandplans. However, we may not know where in the band we can find specific modes of operation. A friend of mine, Mark ZL3AB, compiled an actual bandplan a few years ago and it’s still relevant. Mike ZL2CC
