From THE CHIEF RETIREE

Well I didn’t know there would be so many Fridays in a week until I retired…having said that I can say that I have never been fishing on so many Friday’s in all my life hi hi. My shed has had a thrashing/clean up and I found stuff that I’d forgotten about. I’m told that the HF bands have been great but I haven’t made time to avail myself…and now I find that soon I’ll be going back to my old work while some staff have a holiday…oh well that will make a change from retirement.

I’m a little unsure of this but I believe there is about to be a ham station in Antarctica some time soon, keep an eye out for notices about this as it would be a good location to work.

Our local D-Star repeater and service is going well and has gained a few more local operators over the last month or so.

Recently I had a heart stopping moment when a tractor mounted hedge trimming machine caught a guy wire for my VHF yagi mast…and broke it, however the mast didn’t fall and it was repaired in short order by means best not spoken about, shhhhhhh.

Our meeting schedule for most of the year remaining is nearly full, here is a sample.
25 May, remits and a talk by 2RB and 2DW re old Land Mobile R/T’s (HF and VHF, both AM mode)
22 June (no Pakowhai Hall meeting, instead we will visit the ABB factory at the Napier Airport Industrial Park, more info. to come next month).
27 July, is our annual “Donated Junk Auction”…start gathering your junk and money…a guaranteed fun night. Proceeds to Br 13.
21 Aug (Sun. afternoon) (NOT the usual Wed 24/8 meeting time), a radio related lady guest speaker and perhaps a light BBQ.
More to follow
73 for now, Rob Leicester ZL2US (Br 13/HBARC President)

HISTORY REVISITED

Prior to the death in 1974 of Jim Mills, ZL2BE, one of his contacts was with Ian VK3MO. Ian was able to reminisce recently while visiting Bob ZL2AN in Napier by taking a brief visit to the former Mills Estate near Hastings where Jim had his two Rhombic aerials (one pointing to UK and the other pointing to USA, both on very tall wooden masts which were, depending on the time of the year, above soggy ground. Both fed with open wire feeders from Jim’s shacks…yes he had two).

Ian enjoyed his time catching up on the other end of an old time contact of his. Ian runs stacked Rhombic aerials, one at 70ft and the other at 140ft…and yes they work very well he tells us but compliments them with a Yagi array…4 x 5 element beams stacked on a 200 ft rotating tower. Logics Preamble

At the last Br 13 meeting Ross ZL2WRW gave a talk on SDR…this prompted some historical thoughts/notes from Marilyn ZL2BOA and stirred her into action again.
Here is her historical dissertation

A LECTURE IN LOGICS?

A while ago at a local branch meeting we had an interesting talk on logics. However as I am not at all technically minded, my thoughts soon wandered on to another track parallel to the subject being discussed, and I could see a funny side to this serious topic called logics. The lecture went along the following lines.
The first part was on gates. Gates? Now I don’t know what gates have to do with logics but I got lost at the first one.

LOST AT THE FIRST GATE

AND GATE – ONE THATS THERE      OR GATE – NEITHER HERE OR THERE

NOR GATE – NOT HERE AT ALL      HIGH GATE

LOW GATE      BETWEEN HIGH AND LOW GATES THE GATES GET UNPREDICTABLE

A TRIPLE 5  WOW!

And here is her last meeting thoughts converted on the matter.
