Employed Lands and Survey Department 1937-48, DSIR Geophysics 1949-53, director NZ Oceanographic Institute 1954-77, acting director Fisheries Research Division 1963-67, consultancies with UNESCO 1965-79, ESCAP 1975-78.
Honorary librarian Royal Society of NZ 1965-78, home secretary 1983-87, vice-president 1986-87, council member 1960-61, 1976-80, 1983-87, president NZ Marine Sciences Society 1966-67, Geological Society of NZ 1960-61.
Awarded OBE 1984 for services to science.
Leisure activities include archaeology, historical research.
