PRESIDENT’S COLUMN: You will note we have called this President’s Column, because we consider our President received a pat on the back in respect of letter received from Eastern Hemisphere Department, R.I. , – extracts listed below: – “Your Club’s fellowship and fine activities were complimented by your District Governor recently …In addition to the work you are already doing in community service, you may want to give greater emphasis this year to projects in Vocational service. Community courtesy contests, career conferences for youth, seminars on business ethics and awards to private and governmental employees, are some ways in which the Rotary Club of Hastings might practise service through its members’ vocations. Best wishes for a most successful presidential year.”
Fellows, There is quite a lot happening in the next month. Would you please note the following in your diaries as IMPORTANT ROTARY DATES.
1.   14th February.   Subject to confirmation, which I shall give you on Tuesday, there will be no luncheon meeting on Tuesday, 14th February. The meeting will be held that evening at the D.B. Heretaunga and will be a combined one with Stortford Lodge and Hastings Rotaract. This will be a social meeting and we would like to see as many wives as possible attending.
2.   Saturday, February 17th. The Combined Services Clubs will be distributing a Householder to launch the CHEC programe. 30 odd fellows will be required to give 2/3 hours of their time to complete this project.
3.   And of course you will all be involved in the Monster Gala Day, Saturday, February 25th. Don.

H.O.P.E.   This is a group of Christchurch parents, gathered together to help other parents, whose children have malignant disease. The group is made up of seven couples who have lost a child and seven couples whose children are under treatment. Members give and receive childcare services to allow others to visit children in hospital, to have an evening out or get away for a weekend. They also plan to arrange weekends away from home several times a year for all the families together. The overall aim is to relieve the stress and tension imposed on a family by a sick child. The Canterbury/Westland Division will assist the group in any way possible. Maybe this could be a project for one of our committees to help others form a group in an area – where H.O.P.E. may be needed.

WHAT OTHER CLUBS DOING: The five Rotary Clubs in Hamilton have decided to combine in a project to raise $110,000 for the Waikato Centre for the Blind. All Waikato Clubs will be asked to support a telephone appeal on 18-19 April this year, for this important community need in the Waikato area.

CONFERENCE REPRESENTATIVE: R.I. President Jack Davis, advises the appointment of W.E. (Bill) Skelton, R.I. first Vice President, as his personal representative at our Conference. Vice President Bill is a member of the Blacksburg Club of Virginia, U.S.A., is administrator of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and University and has been a Rotarian since 1955. Make yourself known to him when you attend the Conference.
