ROTARY MAGAZINE WEEK 20-26 APRIL, 1980:   The purpose of the observance of this week is to draw attention to “The Rotarian” and “Rotary Down Under Magazine” and other Rotary publications in other areas of the world.  A Rotary magazine is the vital link between Rotarians world-wide, supplies up to date important news and events and helps to weld all Rotarians together into one continuing chain of service.  On January 1911, 69 years ago, a little 12 page newspaper was first printed and called “The National Rotarian”. Its purpose was to deliver a message.  Our own regional magazine “Rotary Down Under” was first printed in the year 1965 and tells us what other Clubs in our part of the world are thinking about and what projects are being put into action.  The importance of communication is further recognized by the existence of approx. 26 regional magazines presented in at least 17 different languages with their essential source of Rotary Information promoting a greater international understanding through people in service.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER:
Well, the meeting last Tuesday ended in chaos – but what delightful chaos!?  Was it the desire to spend money or the desire to help Outward Bound or the enthusiasm of Peter and Murray, our Auctioneers???  Whatever it was it was a great event in every way – fun and success – plus that vital ingredient – “participation”.  The efforts of the Youth Committee with Paul to the forefront – the hard work of the Auctioneers (we thank them most sincerely), the wonderful generosity of all who provided the items to sell, all topped off by the enthusiastic generosity of the buyers that produced $587.
But that was not all – the Sergeant at Arms combined with Fiji Appeal produced a tidy $60 to which the Club will add another $60.  Added to this – Youth Service have given 10% of the Auction proceeds.  To make it a tidy figure, $200 is being sent to D. G. Bill for him to send to Rotary Suva.  Congratulations and thank you to all for a quick but very successful effort – in keeping with our motto.
Now we come to the help of International Service with a house for our refugees – your urgent assistance, please.  Here again we have the opportunity to show “WE CARE”.   Frank

ARGENTINEAN AND CHILEAN ROTARIANS MEET AT MONTEVIDEO GOODWILL CONFERENCE:  Hosted by 111 Clubs, in Uruguay; President Jim Bomar’s second Conference of Goodwill between Chile and Argentina, took place, 17-19 January, 1980 at Montevideo.  It was an unique experiment, held in the spirit of peace and understanding bringing nearly 200 Rotarians from the two countries together on the “neutral ground” of Montevideo, the birthplace of Rotary in South America.  The Chairman of the Conference, R.I. Vice President Paulo Visiato C. Costa, spoke on Latin America and the future of Rotary.  The co-ordinator for Chile spoke on unity through Rotary and for Argentina, Jorge Hugo Aletta de Sylvas, emphasized Argentinean Chilean unity through youth.  President Jim Bomar, reminded his audience that high in the Andean peaks stand the “Christ of the Andes”, a statue symbolizing the perpetual peace between Argentina and Chile, which has at its base, a bronze plaque presented by Rotarians of both countries.  This huge statue, cast from melted cannons, and standing at the summit of Uspallata Pass on the border of both nations, seemed to appropriately reflect the main theme and purpose of the Conference.  R.I. President unveiled a concrete abstract monument, commemorating Rotary’s 75th Anniversary, built by the Rotary Club of Cordon, Montevideo, Uruguay.  A Goodwill Conference between two countries with a Unity of common faith, language and culture.

WE WILL BE MEETING AT HAVELOCK NORTH.  In lieu of our usual Luncheon Meeting on Tuesday 8 July, 1980 our club will be visiting Havelock North Rotary Club at the D.B. Te Mata Hotel – on Monday evening 7 July next.  We will all meet outside the Hotel main entrance at 5.45 p.m. to enter the meeting prior to the commencement 6 p.m.  An accurate count of our members attending this meeting, is necessary, so that suitable arrangements can be completed for catering purposes by the Havelock Club.  There is No usual Club Luncheon Meeting on Tuesday 8 July – we meet instead on Monday evening 7 July at Havelock North.

NEW COMMITTEES – ROTARY YEAR 1980/81.  Your last reminder to tell Jack Cooper if the Meeting night of your new committee is not suitable.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Hastings Rotary to Camberley or Camberley to Hastings Rotary?  Whichever way you look at it – it was a two-way community affair.  It gave me much delight to receive the cheque of $2500 from Colin and even greater pleasure to present the cheque to John Nelson.  The Community of Camberley, the community of the Club, the community of Hastings and the community of N.Z. as represented by the Government all combining to provide a Community Centre for Camberley.  As John put it, the involvement of so many, not only has provided finance but has given Camberley a feeling of “belonging” something they have not felt before.
Every now and then we have a speaker who holds us spellbound – Pat Parsons did he related his adventures into Hawke’s Bay history.  I’m sure he only whetted our appetite for more.  I’m sure we will listen to him again.
Thank you for the initial response to my appeal for donations to SH.
FRANK
