PRESIDENT’S CORNER:
Fellows, Last Tuesday, we were privileged to have with us the Group Study Exchange from Denmark. This Scheme – Group Study Exchange, is just what it is all about – an exchange. This year, the Team is visiting our District 993, and next year a Team from this District will visit District 149 in Denmark. I believe that the exchange of Teams such as these together with Student Exchange gives us a great opportunity to foster and improve international understanding and goodwill. It gives these young men, each highly qualified in his own field, a unique change to make a personal study in depth of the Host’s District, the people, the customs, industry, sporting activities and trade which is the life blood of both our two countries. For N.Z. with its small population, it is essential that we have markets for our produce always open and available to us. Jack.

GET TO KNOW OUR OVERSEEAS EXCHANGE STUDENT – KALA HOFFMAN: Kala is 16 years of age and comes to our Club from Lawton Oklahoma, which is located in the southern part of the State, about 45 miles from the Texas/Oklahoma border. Lawton has a population of 85,500 with an added population of 20,000 at Fort Still – an Army Post located there. The economy at Lawton is basically agriculture, there are 3 High Schools, and a University. Kala has attended the Eisenhower High School for 5 years and enjoys reading – swimming – camping – outdoor sports, and was lettered on the High School Swim Team (Varsity). She likes snow skiing and water skiing – scuba diving (nationally certified) and enjoys sailing. Kala has willingly accepted many responsibilities – Art Club membership chairman 2 years, President 1 year – Key Club, Octagon Club, French Club, National Jr Honor [Honour] Society. Kala has been prominent in the Speech and Drama Club – was involved in a Speech Programme and has taken part in many speech contests. She has been in many plays in her 10 years of schooling, and feels confident to speak to groups of people. Kala has been engaged in Volunteer Work at the “Y” with regular participation as a Junior Leader for 3 to 4 years, with responsibilities of helping in different activities in the “Y” programme with many different age groups. Kala hopes to eventually attend Texas A. and M. University to study oceanography, and she plans to be either an oceanographer or a marine biologist. During her stay with us, Kala will be attending the Karamu High School. She has been looking forward to  participating in the Student Exchange Programme with our Club and we offer a very warm welcome to Kala Hoffman joining our Rotary family.
