TO HASTINGS ROTARY – FOR YOUR KINDNESS:
We thought you would like to share this Thank you Card with us. “Thank you very much for the beautiful arrangement of flowers you sent me whilst I was in hospital – it was a lovely surprise! Only when you are laid low do you fully appreciate what these gestures of kindness really mean. I have been very lucky and fortunate to make such a speedy recovery. Another few weeks and I’ll be back at work. In the meantime very many thanks for your good wishes.
Sincerely, Lynda Begley.”

PROJECT FUND APPROPRIATIONS – DIRECTORS.
The Directors meeting in February this year is the month that if practicable, disbursements from the Project Account may be considered by the Directors, after receiving reports and recommendations from Committee Chairmen.
A brief note to the Treasurer prior to the Directors meeting would be of assistance.
1.   The estimated gross total requirement on each individual project.
2.   Less any amounts anticipated to be raised by other means or from other sources. We are reminded that this method of disbursement is also another way to get all committees involved in matters relating to project fund appropriations.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER:
A beautiful balmy evening, daylight saving, a fantastic venue, set the theme for 40 Rotary members, their wives and families to enjoy the fun and fellowship at Fantasyland on Tuesday night. These informal and relaxing meetings do much to help to get to know your fellows at Rotary.
Make sure you are present next time, as you are sure to be a winner of fellowship.
Thanks fellows for a good effort.
CHARLIE

SOUTH PACIFIC JUBILEE TRUST.   District advises that at a meeting of the Trustees of the above Trust held in Napier on 14 November, applications were considered for Grants from Clubs of District 993. As the total amount of applications received were in excess of the funds available for distribution, the decision was made to allocate all available funds and the South Pacific Jubilee Trust Fund is now exhausted.
District suggest, that Clubs should give consideration to the desirability of instituting a replacement Trust, so that definite and regular funds are available in the future for projects in the Pacific. It is pointed out, that when the original Trust was set up in 1972, it was intended that the capital would be disbursed until such time as the funds were depleted, on or before 1982, but it is interesting to note that a Trust which started with a capital of $50,000 was, as a result of prudent investment policy, able to disburse a total of $72,940 – in the life time of the Trust. A report will be made to the 1982 District Conference, and Clubs are asked to consider whether District should seek to establish a replacement Trust with no terminating period, and with sufficient capital to yield interest for application to Pacific Projects. It is pointed out that for example, a fund of $200,000 invested at 15% would create an annual income of $30,000 – a continuing source of funds for Pacific Projects. If it was desired to set up a Permanent Trust, we can not understand why the 1981 funds available in the old Trust, were not kept to form the basis for a new Trust. Many clubs have now formed their own Trust, and indeed our own club has done just that. The strengthening of our own local Trust should naturally receive first priority by our club.

RYLA – ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD:
Our District 993 is organizing its 10th Seminar on Rotary Youth Leadership at St. Peter’s School, Cambridge, on May 15 – 22nd, 1982. RYLA originated in Queensland, Australia some 15 years ago. District 993 became involved in the year 1970 and two years later, our club selected its first Awardees. RYLA is a “Service to Youth” project, aimed at young people between the ages of 18 – 23 inclusive on February 1st, 1982. The selection of Awardees acknowledges the contributions being made by them in the community and the full one week’s Seminar attempts to encourage further participation and the development of leadership. In announcing all this to the club, Rei Apatu – our RYLA Officer – also mentions, that approx. 70 Awardees from the 50 clubs in our District will meet at St. Peter’s School, Cambridge and that applications are now being received by him, to close Tuesday 20 April next, followed by the applicants presented to a selection committee soon after closing date of such applications. Our RYLA Officer draws to your attention that selection is not based on high academic abilities, but is on the basis of character – general education – personality – a desire for community involvement, and leadership potential. Secondary school students are not eligible. Our members are reminded that sons and daughters of Rotarians are eligible – or maybe you have someone in your employment. Members are asked to bring RYLA to the attention of suitable young people. Rei Apatu – RYLA Officer would be pleased to receive your nominations NOW – remember – closing date for applications, Tuesday 20 April. Act now for RYLA.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER:
In these days, Easter means a holiday sporting fixtures, Highland Games, community involvement or just peace and quiet.     With all this activity and opportunity, the original meaning of Easter is pushed into the background or not even given a thought. It may well be, that if more thought was given to the sacrifice, resurrection and the message it conveys, life would take on a greater meaning. Tolerance, respect and understanding of each other, could make, not only our lives but International Understanding a positive thing.
Have a happy Easter.
CHARLIE

LIBRARY OF BASIC ROTARY PUBLICATIONS TO BE DEVELOPED:   At present, Rotary publishes several hundred papers, pamphlets and books. Some of the pamphlets contain material that is duplicated in others and some need to be brought up to date. Many of these will now be consolidated into new publications concerning related subjects. For example, there will be a greater “volume” in the new Rotary Basic library for each avenue of service. Rather than merely being translated from English, these new texts will be adapted and rewritten in various countries to make their style and context suitable for readers in those countries served.

JOIN THE THEATRE PARTY. Our Entertainment Committee have formed a party and invite members and wives to join them – to the latest theatre production of the Hastings Musical Comedy Company, “A Bedful of Foreigners”. PRESIDENT’S CORNER:
The invitation to attend Kala’s graduation received by her host families was a pleasant surprise, but all felt a letter would have been more appropriate. To show that we of Hastings Rotary are part of a family, one of our clear thinking Dads, suggested we send some message for her graduation on behalf of all, with cut flowers and a message of “Congratulations from your Hastings Families and All Rotarians”, went on its way.
Thanks Dad for your nudge. Maybe a letter or two from Down Under will bring a surprise. CHARLIE

HAVE YOU SAID HI THERE TO OUR NEW MEMBER?
James Frank Hurford – club name Jim – is the latest addition to our club and he comes to us with the classification of Insurance Broker. Jim was born in Hastings and has been engaged in activities in the insurance world for approx. the past 20 years, working in many other parts, such as Timaru and Fiji. Whilst in Timaru, Jim was the Secretary of the local Jaycees and he was also a member of this organization in Fiji, so as you can see he is no stranger to service in the community. He joined the New Zealand Insurance Brokers Ltd. in the year 1979, where today he holds the position of Hastings Branch Manager.
Jim is a member of a number of social clubs – Hastings Club, County Club – and is an associate member of two other social clubs. He doesn’t get much time for sport, likes the occasional game of indoor bowls, squash, plays tennis on his home court for exercise and the odd social game of golf. Another member of our golf team?   Although Jim is dedicated to his Vocational field, he considers he gets the best of both worlds in the Town & Country scene – living on 30 acres of farm land, raising sheep and cattle.
Jim is married with two children and we are sure the Ladies will be looking forward to meeting his wife, Joy.
Jim Hurford – welcome to Rotary.
