PROGRAMME: We remember Bob Fenton – our speaker today serving us well as the Member of Parliament for Hastings. Many of us also remember when he spoke to our Club on June, 1977 and indeed also as far back to August 1972 speaking to us in his capacity as President of WARD – War Against Recreational Disruption. Bob seems to like to speak on matters he feels are of concern to our Community and today he talks to us as Hospice Appeal Director, on the proposed Hospice at the former Knight Street Hospital (details of In-Patient Treatment and Out-Care.)

PRESIDENT’S CORNER:
The year ahead.
To a large degree the year ahead will be what we make it. However, many pressures are being exerted on the business world today and I fear that the next twelve months will be challenging to us all. Our Rotary Club motto is “WE CARE” and I trust this will be applied fully within our club this year to our fellow members.

INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP THROUGH ROTARY:
Our fellow Rotarian, Bob Fish, has made more than one trip to South Africa during his many overseas trips in the last few years and developed grand fellowship through many Clubs in Rotary. The Past President of one such Club, who is now President Elect of a new Club, is now extending the hand of friendship to all our members – through Bob Fish – and we reprint below, a portion of this letter:
….Am writing to you to send you our new Club of Uvongo’s Greetings during this week 22-26 Feb. of “World Understanding and Peace Through Rotary” – so we have a link of friendship with Rotarians and others, overseas. Our new Club had its Induction Charter Dinner on Nov. 29…..We have 30 members of which at least 24 have never been Rotarians. The range of ages is 25-70….. Uvongo’s Town Hall is being rented to our Club as a “Community Centre” and we are busy renovating it….  I would be grateful Bob, if you would show the enclosed Brochure to your members – and maybe some might like to become “Pen Friends” with our Rotarians. Would you ask your Club if they would present our new Club with a Banner? When ours are made, then we could reciprocate, Our Chairman of International Committee is Mr John Bishop – and our Club address is: Rotary Club of Uvongo, District 927, P.0. Box 544, Uvongo 4270, South Africa. Best wishes – Digger and Elza Ryley.” –
We mention here, that Uvongo is situated on the banks of the Uvungo River from which the name Uvongo is derived. “Uvungo” means a “low murmur” in Zulu refers  to the sound of the waterfall falling into the lagoon below. Uvongo is on ithe Natal Lower South West Coast facing the Indian Ocean. We hope our club will make available, one of our Club Banners and a Good Wishes Card for sending to this new Club in the interest of the new 1982-83 R.I. President’s Theme -“Mankind is One – Build Bridges of Friendship throughout the World.”

JUST ANOTHER LITTLE CHAT ABOUT WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICE:
Last week we mentioned about the need for interested persons to help as a team in the rebuilding of the Technical Block at Pilolevu College, Pangai, following the devastation through hurrican [hurricane] Isaac in Tonga. This college is a secondary school run by the Free Wesleyan Mission.
This week, we mention that although Pilolevu College is a big project, there is another most important part of the 993 WCS programme.
The Home Development and Hygiene began three Years ago in Ha’aikio is a ongoing and important development through the efforts of women’s groups throughout Tonga. The Rotary Clubs of Taumarunui, Paeroa E., Otorohanga, Otomoetai [Otumoetai], Cambridge Kihikihi, Hamilton, Waipawa, Frankton and Hamilton E., have all been concerned with this area of development.
Hurricane re-housing is another possibility. This committee, with a combined team from Paeroa, Fairfield, Taumarunui and Te Puke Clubs, has a team of Tongan blockmakers and builders in Ha’apai. Homes need to be built, The Building Team needs work and clubs are asked if they need a project.
Solomon Islands. Morrinsville Club invite interested Rotarians to join them in a big re-building project. They are awaiting a report from their reconnaissance team.
Frankton Club. Looking at a major water supply to seven villages – also invite people to join their work party.

AUSTRALIAN GOLFING FELLOWSHIP OF ROTARY TASMANIAN  COMMITTEE:
The 5th A.G.F.R. Championship will be held in Launceston Tasmania – from Tuesday 22 February, through to Friday 25th, 1986. Entry forms are now available from Rotarian Peter Roberts, 8 Notley St., Newsham, Tasmania, 7250. Early entry essential – expecting many visiting Rotarians and Ladies. Note – this is the week of the Anniversary of Rotary, also “World Understanding Week,”

SPARE A THOUGHT: How much easier it is to advise – than to lend a helping hand.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER:
As always it was good to have the girls with us.
Vivienne Rarere is obviously very excited about her coming stay in South Africa. I have been concerned, as have the Directors, at some of the publicity and attitudes towards Vivienne’s proposed visit, but I am reassured that Vivienne will be well hosted and cared for whilst in South Africa. She is a delightful person and I am sure will prove to be a great ambassadoress [ambassadress] for our Club and Country.
