ROTARY BRINGS HOPE

PRESIDENT ROBBIES PIECE
The countdown is now on for the Music Carnival at Fantasyland and it is very pleasing to see the good response from our Club to Youth Committee Chairman David’s call for assistance. We will be in a position to advise you all what your duty will be that day at our meeting on the 17th.
Chris Reynolds who spoke to us at our meeting about St Helens was delighted with the response he had from our Club and I believe Chris is very proud of his homeland. Last Tuesday Scott Chapelski from Canada spoke to us and he also was a delightful speaker.
I could not help thinking that recently two Exchange students have spoken to us, both of them very happy and getting a real benefit from the Student Exchange Programme. Remember we have the opportunity again to send a student away in January 1988.  Nominations close at the end of February.

Directors have approved the nomination of Richard Lowe to fill the classification of “LODGE ACCOMMODATION”.
If no objections are received by 28th February he will be invited to join the Club.

ROTARY BRINGS HOPE

PRESIDENT ROBBIE’S PIECE
To all those that supported the auction day, a big thank you. Our Rotarian Rex is the right person for the job and when he is in action I for one am concerned that if I blink I own something. Rather pleased that I was not on crutches that day. Thank you once again, Rex for a job well done. Attendance at our meetings has been slipping for some time now, and I along with directors am concerned about it. Fellows, there is a requirement upon joining Rotary as to ones attendance at meetings. Can I suggest that we think about this and if we could regain the attendance that we had at our meeting on 10 March, your directors and I would be very pleased. If you are unable to attend a meeting you have the opportunity to make-up at any other Rotary Club and this of course helps us in our report back to our District Headquarters.
Please also remember to ring in your apology to Ray Burney by 11.30 on the morning of our meeting if you are unable to attend.

MAKE-UPS FOR FEBRUARY
Ron Walker – Havelock North 16th
Derek Burns – Napier 2nd
Derek Burns – Havelock North 9th
Only two fellows making up for February and to date none have been notified for March.
This indicates that members are not endeavouring to make up for absence at our Luncheon meetings and so keep up their attendance requirement.

RYLA: A reminder, that nominations of suitable young people aged from 18 to 23, to attend this Rotary Youth Leadership Seminar, close on Tuesday 31 March. Contact Rei Apatu 783833 urgently if you know of a suitable nominee.

MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT – IT’S A BIG JOB
Just because our Club has a membership promotion Committee, it doesn’t mean that the rest of us are absolved of the responsibility of proposing qualified new members. Let’s have some action and nominations for the following “Open Classifications”:
Travel Services – Horticultural Advisory Services
Insurance Broking Administration – Baker
Newspaper Publishing Weekly – Plumbing Administration
Accountant/Sports Bodies
Nomination cards are available from Secretary Frank.

STOP PRESS It is with regret we advise the passing of Bill Langford on Wednesday evening. His funeral will be at St Matthews Church at 11 o’clock on Saturday morning.

ROTARY BRINGS HOPE
PRESIDENT ROBBIE’S PIECE
Changeover night is now less than two weeks away, and I have just realised that because our Bulletin is published every second week, this will be my last President’s Piece.
It has been said before that as the rotary year draws to a close you ask yourself where has the year gone. I believe it went so quickly because of the enjoyment both Ngaire and I have had in leading the Hastings Rotary Club over the last year. This was achieved by the excellent support that we have had from Directors, Committee Chairmen and indeed the whole Club. We have had a busy year and the Club has successfully completed many excellent projects, had some wonderful and interesting speakers, assisted with young people to Outward Bound and RYLA and of course we were delighted when Lee Barradell was awarded her Scholarship.
Next Rotary Year we have an inward exchange student and our own Christopher Davis leaving for a year as our representative. I believe, President Elect Rod, has an exciting year ahead for us all. So to you all, thank you again for your support and help.

Former Hastings member and Sergeant-at-arms, Harry Ballis, sends greetings to Club members from Melbourne where he is working on his Doctorate at La Trobe Univesity [University]. Harry, a Seventh-day Adventist pastor, has a part-time job lecturing at Victoria’s largest Catholic Teachers College, and say he is “having a ball helping Catholic post-graduate students to become more effective in presenting their religion in their church schools”.

Thank you Ngaire and Robbie for a great Rotary Year. We have all enjoyed Rotary under your leadership this past year. You have earned your overseas holiday and we wish you both well for the future.

Bob Parrant mentioned, in his thank you speech today, how much the Four Way Test means to him. It is some time since we spoke of the Four Way Test, so it is restated below.
1   Is it the Truth?
2   Is it Fair to all concerned?’
3   Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships?
4   Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?
