ROTARY BRINGS HOPE

PRESIDENT ROD’S COMMENTS
Thank you Ngaire and Robbie for an outstanding year, of fellowship, projects and fun. You have surely earned a well deserved rest.
Fellows, we are beginning a new Rotary year which will present its own challenges and projects both new and old. We look forward to picking up our association with the Golf Classic, Bowls Tournament and the Fantasyland Music Carnival.
I would like to thank everyone who attended Changeover Night, for truly it was you people who made it the success that it was. Mark Twain sums up my input for Changeover Night, with the following quote:
“I am glad I did it, partly because it was well worth it and chiefly because I shall never have to do it again.”

MEET OUT NEW MEMBER – RICARDO de TREEND
Born in Western Samoa but has lived in New Zealand since the age of three. Educated in Hastings, he attended Hastings Boys’ High School – under the watchful eye of Frank Crist. Richardo also spent four months as an exchange student at the Lycee Paul Gaugin College in Tahiti.
Upon leaving school, Ricardo worked for the BNZ for a couple of years before moving to Tauranga where he took up a career in horticulture. Presently he is a director of Redgrave Garden Centre. He and his wife Cheryl, have two sons – Carlos and Jarred, aged 5 and 2, with a third child due in November.

Changeover Night was a great success. I am sure that the club will have a wonderful year with President Rod and Carol at the helm.
Most of you will have new Rotary jobs this year so let’s all resolve to carry out our Duties to the best of our abilities. Robbie and Ngaire and Derek and Betty Burns leave shortly  for overseas holidays. We wish you a happy and relaxing time and look forward to your safe return.

Congratulations to our 3 new senior active members – David Davidson – Garry Pike – Ian Cameron
Well done fellows. Hope you are all still with us in another 15 years.

It was good to see our three new members present at Changeover.
Well done fellows.

PARTING THOUGHT   Some day today will be one of the good old days.

DEDICATED TO PEACE

PRESIDENT ROD’S PIECE
Thank you Fellows, for your support on Tuesday last, for the annual visit of our District Governor, Chas Woolley. As it was expressed by Secretary Frank, Chas Woolley is a breath of fresh air blowing through our Rotary District.

Fellows, please make yourselves known to Cheryl Kramer, our new Overseas Exchange Student. Cheryl, is from Sioux Falls, South Dakota and her interests are horse riding, piano, singing and acting. Cheryl has been staying with Ann and Ray Custance but by the time you receive this newsletter, she will be with Helen and Ron Walker, her first host parents. Fellows, you will be advised through the bullet in when it is your turn to host Cheryl for a Rotary Luncheon. If for some reason you are unable to attend, please arrange for another member to take your place for that duty.

By the way – you won’t skid if you stay in a rut.
(A rut is a grave with both ends knocked out.)

ROTARY CLUBS IN USA ADMIT WOMEN AS MEMBERS
On 4th May the USA Supreme Court handed down a unanimous decision supporting California law holding that Rotary clubs may not exclude women from membership in Rotary on the basis of their gender. This decision appears to apply also to all clubs in other states of the USA with similar public accommodation laws. Some clubs are already admitting women as members. Since the RI Constitution provides for operating within the laws of all countries and administrative areas where there are Rotary clubs; Rotary clubs in the USA  affected by the decision are expected to abide by this ruling of the highest court in the nation. Those qualified women elected to membership should be welcomed when visiting other clubs. Of course, the Court decision does not affect clubs outside the USA.

NOTES FROM THE DIRECTORS MEETING
The Bowls Tournament (Fun Day) is set down for 28th September (or Friday 2nd October, if wet.)
It is felt that the Rotary Fountain, outside the Library, is now unsuitable. It was decided that a suitable letter be sent to the Council suggesting that the Fountain be converted to a garden.
Leave of absence was granted to Alan Scott from 1st to 22nd September.
The Youth Committee report that preliminary work is under way in organising the Fantasyland Music Festival.
International Committee report that their main project for the year will be to sponsor an English teacher to China. This project is to be carried out in conjunction with Hastings City Council.

DEDICATED TO PEACE

PRESIDENT ROD’S PIECE
Fellows, we were indeed privileged to have Dr Cunliffe speak to us and our ladies last week. When you see how disabled some people are, you can only count your blessings. It was all so thought provoking, when you see the dedication of men like Dr Cunliffe, and his staff, for the disabled.
We also have our own saints in our own club, namely Drs Graeme and David (Service above self).
Talking about thought provoking! Don’t forget about your commitment to obtaining sponsors for our charity golf tournament. If you have possible sponsors in mind please let Ian Cameron know of them.

MEET OUR NEW MEMBER – Geoff [Jeff] Whittaker
Geoff was educated at Hamilton Boys’ High School. He is married to Helen and they have four children. In 1964 he opened Whittakers Pharmacy in Havelock North and became very involved in Havelock’s affairs to the extent that he was elected a Borough Councillor. He served on the Council for 18 years, 6 of which he was Deputy Mayor and 9 years, Mayor. In 1983 he opened the Garden Centre which he operates with Helen. (As a matter of interest, the Garden Centre was originally Wilson’s Nurseries, founded by late Rotarian and club member, Don Wilson.)
Geoff is a keen sportsman with his main interests being Equistrian [Equestrian] Dressage, fishing and skiing (snow).
Helen and Geoff, we welcome you to the Hastings Rotary Club.

Our latest Paul Harris sustaining member was announced at Tuesday’s Luncheon. Congratulations to Len Webb on being honoured by the Club in this way. In selecting Len for this award, the Directors took into account not only Len’s Rotary Service, but also his service to his community and church. Well done, Len.

Your Red Handbook requires one or two alterations made to it. Please note the following: David[son] Davidson – Ph 60 214 work, 69 335 Home Don Patterson – Delete 85 507, replace with 786 804

Add Geoff Whittaker – Work 82 181 – Home 83 762

As this is the last Newsletter before the Christmas break, President Rod and the Directors would like to join me (the Editor), in wishing you and yours our very best wishes for the Festive Season and the coming year. Enjoy your break and return in force on January 19th to support Rod to the full in the major projects that are planned during the next 6 months.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
