100% Attendance Day

PRESIDENT IAN’S CORNER
I have received a letter from Cheryl Kramer, thanking the Club and her host families for her year in New Zealand. In her words, “It was the best year of my life.” Cheryl is now attending the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.
The Club’s Annual Meeting is to be held on the 4th October and it is proposed to take the opportunity to deal with a number of other interesting items. A full attendance would be appreciated; perhaps we could aim for 100% that day. Mark it in your diary now!

GST Team Leader to Texas late 1989
If you know a club member who would be prepared to accept nomination for this position, please let Bob Parrant know urgently. Nominations close with District on 30th September.

POLIO PLUS – Total of US$223.6  million so far, as reported in RDU for September. To date R.I. estimates 100 million Third World children have been immunized against polio through Polio Plus programme. This represents over 400 million doses!

The Rotary Club of Blenheim South, is soliciting mail orders for cases (12 bottles) of Marlborough’s Merlen Wines. For those of you who know Merlen, the company was formed to build a winery for putting to work the winemaking skills of Almuth Lorenz. 1988 is Amuth’s seventh vintage in Marlborough, during which time she has enjoyed hugh [high] acclaim and has several national and international awards to her credit. For each mixed case of wine sole on one of the special “Rotary” order forms, Rotary will receive $16. Of this $11 will go to our Club Project account. Let me have your orders now and be in good time for Christmas. A case contains 4 each of Rhine Riesling – Gewurztraminer – Muller Thurgau.

PRESIDENT IAN’S CORNER
Lee Barradell, our Guest Speaker this week, is certainly an outstanding young professional young lady and our Club and Rotary at large can be well  pleased at having selected her as a Rotary Foundation Graduate Scholar, to study in USA.
Despite wider opportunities elsewhere it is pleasing to hear her say she has decided to stay and work as a pharmacist at the Hastings Hospital.
Rotary Charity Golf Tournament – Sunday 29 January (only 8 weeks away)
This is to be our principle fund raising effort for the year and I am really seeking the support of all club members, to obtain sponsors at $50 per sponsorship. Details at next club meeting.
John Cornelius has the actual tournament organising well underway.

MEET OUR NEW MEMBER – MICHAEL (MIKE) BOYCE
Mike was born in Christchurch and completed his education at Taita College, Hutt Valley. He transferred to Hawkes Bay in 1966 and worked in the Fire and Accident Insurance field for 17 years and was then appointed manager of the Hastings Building Society, which position he currently holds. He and Delys have been happily married for 23 years. They have three children, Stewart, Allister and Jan – Maree.
Mike is a keen cricketer and a follower of all sporting codes. He is president of the HB Branch of the Daimler and Lanchester Owners Club and is keen on car restoration.
Welcome to Rotary Mike and Delys.
