DIARY NOTES
Monday 24 April   Directors meeting will be held at President Ian’s home at 7.45 pm
30th June Weekend – District Conference – Tauranga

Congratulations to Neil Donaldson on his election as Vice President of the club for the 1989 – 90 Rotary year.

Starting 1st July 1989, Group Study Exchange Teams may now comprise both men and women, rather than all men or all women as has been the rule in the past.
The role of GSE Team Leader has now been opened to women Rotarians and a team leader may now be accompanied by his or her spouse.

PRESIDENT IAN’S CORNER
The meeting of the RI Council on Legislation last January adopted a change in the constitution and by – laws that permits Rotary Clubs world wide to admit qualified women members as from 1 July 1989. It is anticipated this decision will be ratified at the International Convention to be held in Seoul next month.
Thank you fellows for giving the subject appropriate consideration (with a touch of humour), last Tuesday. Clubs have been invited to submit nominations for: “Outstanding Citizen of the Year Awards”, by 30 April. These Awards (Senior and Teenager) recognise people whose services to the community exemplify the ideals of Rotary and will be presented at the District Conference in June. Are there any persons in our community worthy of our nomination?

Decision taken at the last Directors meeting included:
1)   Financial assistance was give to Miss Fay McLaren to attend the April Outward Bound course. On her return from Anakiwa she will be entering the Police Training College.
2)   An order has been placed for 250 “Hastings Rotary Pens”. These are to be presented to our speakers and will be available to members for $3.50.
3)   $50 donation has been made to the Heretaunga Maori Wardens Assn.

Youth Committee reported that 2 teachers from Karamu High School were to be assisted to attend a “Peer Support Seminar at a cost of $60 ea.

INTERNATIONAL – Glen Stevens completes his term in China at the end of July and returns to New Zealand for Christmas. A replacement will be required. After informal talks with the Hastings City Council, it has been tentatively agreed that a 2 for 2 exchange will take place between Guilin and Hastings and that the Council will be responsible for par of the cost of such an exchange.

OLD FOLKS OUTING – 36 old folk were treated to a bus trip followed by afternoon tea and sing song at Twyford Hall last Sunday.
(Good Community Service).

GSE Teams are made up of business and professional people, age 25 to 35 who spend 4 to 6 weeks studying their host country’s economic, cultural, social and business life. During 1989 – 90, 334 Districts will participate in 179 exchanges.

PRESIDENT IAN’S CORNER
Our meeting last Tuesday was an excellent finale to the rotary year. Ruth Richardson’s obvious enthusiasm and energy and the opportunity to congratulate Bryce on being awarded a well deserved MBE by our Queen seemed to give us all a lift.
I thank all members for their contribution to our club during the past year and for the support and guidance to me personally. It has been an enjoyable year for me and also, I hope, for all our fellow members.
Let us attend the Change-over next Tuesday in good numbers to give Gary an encouraging start for the 89/90 Rotary year.

FROM THE DIRECTORS MEETING
1.   Geoff Johnson has joined the Auckland East Rotary Club.
2.   Past member David Harris who moved to Queensland is the incoming President of the Broadbeach Rotary Club.
3.   David Butcher has accepted the club’s invitation to become an honorary member.
4.   Rotary ties in maroon – brown – grey or blue are again available at a cost of $15. Orders to Secretary Frank.
5.   Ian Lawson was elected as the Director from the floor for the 89/90 year with Roger Bate and Don Patterson being the two past Presidents elected.
6.   Colin Blackmore has been granted leave of absence to the end of August.

OUT WITH THE OLD – IN WITH THE NEW
As Change – over approaches may I, on behalf of all the members, express our very sincere thanks to President Ian and Kere for their leadership and a year devoted to Rotary service. Ian has given us a year of good Rotary fellowship and should feel satisfied that he hand over a club in good shape for the coming year. Ian and Kere leave us for three months overseas. May you have a good rest and safe travelling.
And so we welcome incoming President Gary and Pam, assuring them of our full support. You will be surprised how fast this year will pass Gary, and I am sure you will look back at this time next year, with pride at a job well done.
SEE YOU ALL AT CHANGE–OVER
