PRESIDENT NEIL’S NOTES
It may seem early to start talking of next years District 993 Conference but I do so for a reason. It is to be held in Hastings and as a Club, we will be asked to have a share in its organisation. Over recent years, attendance at a conference has never seemed a priority to our Club and I’m sure this is to our disadvantage. I must admit to feeling embarrassed for the Club when at the roll call at this year’s conference in Napier, I was the sole representative. Taradale had 43 people registered (including wives), while Kihikihi, one of the smaller clubs in the district had 25.
Speakers included Dame Cath Tizard, Dr Ken Rhodes, Winston Peters, Sir Graham Latimer, Richard Prebble and Sir David Beattie – a more interesting lineup on one programme would be hard to find. Rotary Foundation information affecting GSE teams and Overseas Student Exchange was shared. This mainly concerned the dwindling contributions from Clubs to the Foundation which could well restrict these programmes. Project and Membership development awards were made with Napier West winning the Significant Achievement award with a $35,000 project of aditions [additions] to a Sea Scout Hall. Waikato Sunrise Club (7 am meeting time) won the Membership award.
Looking forward now to next year, the Stortford Lodge Club has been asked to take the early initiatives in planning and I am keen that we are ready to play our part when asked. Nearer the event we will be encouraging as high an attendance as possible, for Conference will never be easier or cheaper to attend than when it is on our doorstep.

WOMEN IN ROTARY – We are urged to be open enough and ready enough to encompass changes that will inevitably come in the 1990’s. There was an article on this subject in the June issue of Rotary Down Under. Did you make time to read it?
On straight statistics, there are now 20,217 women members in a total of 5,027 clubs in 239 Districts. Seven of these members are in New Zealand clubs with two in our District.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE HAS BEEN GRANTED TO –
Vel Velvin for 6 weeks from June 26th.
Stewart Reddy for 6 months.
