THOUGHT FROM TE KUITI CLUB
“Do not squander time – it is the stuff that life is made of”.

PRESIDENT MERV’S COMMENTS
The high temperatures in Hawkes Bay recently remind us of how fortunate we are to live in this area. While areas have been troubled with adverse weather our night temperatures have been higher than the day ones of many parts of the country.
The havoc of the recent Los Angeles earthquake as seen on TV recalls the Napier earthquake of 1931. Almost  exactly 63 years ago this area was devastated by a major earthquake. One of the good things to arise from this was stricter building codes and safety measures. A similar earthquake today would not see as much damage or loss of life even though the population has been greatly increased. This is also reflected in the LA one where very few died compared with similar earthquakes in Mexico, Turkey etc where building codes are not so stringent.
The golf tournament will benefit the CCS and Salvation Army and I hope that all fellows will get involved on Sunday. Have a good time and contribute to two good causes.

ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD (RYLA)
Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is a programme for young men and women aged from 18-24 years. It was officially adopted by Rotary International in 1971 after being developed in Australia and New Zealand. Conducted at District level, RYLA offers a carefully balanced educational and social programme to develop qualities of leadership and good citizenship, and introduces a large number of young people and their families to the Rotary ideals of service.
The actual training seminar lasts for one week during the May school holidays but an important part of the project is the introduction of the awardees to the whole Club membership after their selection and nomination, and before the seminar. Equally important is the presentation of the awardees to the sponsoring Club on their successful completion of the programme.

ROTARY FOUNDATION.
The Rotary Foundation is one of the most powerful influences for good at work for mankind in the world today.
It is totally independent of any Government’s policy or financial support and it is on a scale which can have real impact upon the peoples of countries great and small. Every Rotarian contributes financially towards the work of the Foundation and it would be a rare club that does not, during the year, mount a Club project to support its work.
The Foundation maintains programmes in health (3-H), education of the individual (Scholarships), international understanding (GSE), and special humanitarian projects (Special Grants).
In District 9930 the Foundation’s work is co-ordinated by seven sub-committees. Each of these groups can only work effectively if the Clubs are fully informed and maintain efficient liaison. Preferably through an individual Rotarian who has particular interest and care in that facet of Rotary outreach.
