BURGMANS, John Leo
Horticultural researcher, MAF Technology, Hastings.
Born The Hague, 31 May 1934; arrived in NZ, 1956, son of Johannes Burgmans and Wilhelmina (née de Niet); married Mieke Pronk, daughter of Johannes Pronk, 1957; three daughters.
Education: Primary and secondary education in The Hague; horticultural education at Boskoop, Netherlands, in tropical agriculture, ornamental crops and landscape architecture, 1951-1955.
In charge of an NZ Forest Service nursery providing plant material for forests and parks at Ngaumu Forest, Masterton, 1957-1961; Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries Horticultural Research Centre, Levin, 1961-1972, where involved with glasshouse crop research; MAF Hawke’s Bay Agricultural Research Centre, Hastings, 1972 -; responsible for vegetable trials for processing and fresh market; current work includes identification of research needs for vegetables in Hawke’s Bay, concentrating on introduction of new and novel vegetable crops and products.
Recreations: computer programming, North Seamaritime history, family history.
